Florence Pugh recently opened up about not wanting to take on roles of characters like Dani from Ari Aster’s Midsommar. Accordingly, fans are interested in learning what Pugh said.

Here is what Florence Pugh said about her Midsommar role and its impact on her life.

Florence Pugh had taken on roles that left herself “broken” for an extended period of time.

“Like when I did Midsommar, I definitely felt like I abused myself in the places that I got myself to go,” she told Josh Smith in an appearance on his podcast, Reign with Josh Smith. The Black Widow star mentioned that over the years, she had learned to start “protecting” herself from taking on roles that could prove incredibly difficult to get into because of it.

However, Pugh did not regret starring in the film, even stating that she was “really proud” of her performance. “But yeah, there’s definitely things that you have to respect about yourself,” she added.

In Midsommar, Pugh’s Dani is portrayed as a grief-stricken woman. Following her character’s sister and parents’ suicide, she goes to a nine-day midsummer festival. Here, she got entrapped in various dangerous rituals and ceremonies that rendered her insane by the end of the film.

Pugh had admitted in a March 2023 appearance on the Off Menu podcast with Ed Gamble and James Acaster that she had never played a role like Midsommar’s Dani before taking on the role, which was extremely taxing. “I would put myself in really s*** situations that maybe other actors don’t need to do, but I would just be imagining the worst things,” she said. Pugh added that her portrayal became more difficult each day she filmed. She filled her head with “things” that got “worse and more bleak.”
