Sunderland have been on the up in recent years, winning promotion to the Championship and searching for a Premier League return. There has been plenty of change in the dugout, with former managers Tony Mowbray and Michael Beale both departing, leaving owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus bringing in Regis Le Bris.
But who earns what at the Stadium of Light? Football FanCast has taken a look at what Sunderland are paying their players, as per Capology.
Disclaimer – only the club and the players themselves truly know their wages, so take each of these figures as you will.

Here are Sunderland’s top 10 earners…
10
Ian Poveda
£9,000 per week
Ian Poveda arrived at the club over the summer on a free transfer after leaving Leeds United. The winger spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign with Sheffield Wednesday where he impressed.
It was Sunderland who won the transfer race, though, with Poveda under contract until 2027.
9
Nazariy Rusyn
£9,000 per week
It has been a struggle so far for 2023 signing Nazariy Rusyn, whom Sunderland wrote a seven-figure cheque for to Zorya Luhansk.
The forward hasn’t found the back of the net on a regular basis, but he is one of the bigger earners at the club, penning a contract through to 2027.
8
Anthony Patterson
£10,000 per week
Moving up to players who earn a five-figure weekly salary now, with goalkeeper Anthony Patterson one of eight Sunderland players who earn £10,000 a week or more.
The shot-stopper is a product of the club’s academy and has been first-choice in recent years. Patterson signed a new deal through to 2028 last year, which will see him pocket more than £2.5m across that time.
7
Dennis Cirkin
£10,000 per week
Dennis Cirkin didn’t have a 23/24 season to remember on a personal level, missing large parts of the campaign through injury.
The former Tottenham youngster signed for the Black Cats in 2021 and was a regular in the side prior to having surgery. He is under contract until 2026, though, so Sunderland supporters could still see plenty of Cirkin over the coming years.
6
Jobe Bellingham
£12,500 per week
A key piece of business in 2024 for Sunderland was keeping Jobe Bellingham at the Stadium of Light. The teenager starred for the Black Cats in his first campaign with the club and actually signed a new four-year deal in August.
Whether or not Bellingham will still be a Sunderland player in 2028 is tough to predict.
5
Patrick Roberts
£12,500 per week
Someone who played a key role in helping Sunderland back into the Championship was Patrick Roberts, who scored the late winner in the play-off semi-final second leg against Sheffield Wednesday.
Roberts has clearly found himself a home in the north-east and has been on the books since 2022. He has just under two years remaining on his £12,500 per week deal, so it could soon be time to sit down and discuss fresh terms.
4
Salis Abdul Samed
£15,000 per week
Midfielder Salis Abdul Samed was another to arrive at the Stadium of Light over the summer of 2024, joining on a season-long loan from Lens.
The Ghana international was once valued at €18m by Transfermarkt, so Sunderland will be hoping to get the best out of him over the coming months.
3
Daniel Ballard
£15,000 per week
Former Arsenal youngster Daniel Ballard has also found a permanent home at Sunderland after signing in 2022, establishing himself as a regular in the Black Cats side.
The centre-back, who is a Northern Ireland international, appears to be going from strength to strength at the Stadium of Light and is under contract until 2028.
2
Alan Browne
£15,000 per week
Sunderland were able to make Alan Browne the club’s joint permanent highest earner over the summer as they weren’t required to pay a transfer fee for his services.
The Republic of Ireland international left Preston North End and moved to Sunderland, with his £15,000 per week deal running until 2027.
1
Chris Mepham
£35,000 per week
The top Sunderland earner for the 2024/25 is loanee Chris Mepham. The Wales defender was surplus to requirements at AFC Bournemouth and joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan.
Mepham’s contract with Bournemouth actually expires next year, so perhaps Sunderland could already be eyeing up a permanent move, should he impress.
