If today’s Connections puzzle is making you snore, then you might not need hints and are probably not reading this. However, if it is making you frustrated, you may need a few nudges to get you to the finish line and help you achieve victory. You may find today’s puzzle to be challenging, as there are some tricky spots, but with a little context this puzzle can get a lot easier very quickly.
If you are interested in a word search, you should try out the NYT’s Strands puzzle. These puzzles are full of interesting cultural references and are a little harder than the traditional word search. The biggest piece of that is because the game does not give you the words you are searching for. Even when you get a hint, it only highlights the letters, not the words present. It is a fun challenge and one that often has a very fun pop culture reference as well.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 29 #598
In today’s puzzle, there are some what seem to be obvious connections, but in other categories, there are some words that you wouldn’t typically think of. There is also one category that will either be quite easy or quite hard, depending on how familiar with certain headlines you have been. If you need some more context, you can check the hints below to see if you can solve it without the spoilers.
- One category is about words that indicate the current state of something
- One category is about things that can, but don’t necessarily have to, happen during a certain state
- One category is about four things that are all tied by the time frame they emerged
- One category is about four words that come before a different word in a phrase – that word is a place you might live

BORE |

HELD |
POSSESSED |
This one could be confusing, particularly since it uses words used in contexts that they are not usually. POSSESSED and HAUNTED would normally go together culturally, but not in this category. BORE is also a little confusing, as it is not typically used in this fashion. It even seems like a bit of a stretch for it to be here, because I originally connected it to HELD, not as a sense of ownership. It is much closer to “carry,” which is not the same thing, but maybe that’s too pedantic for a Connections puzzle.

DREAM |
DROOL |
SNORE |
TALK |
This one is also a little difficult, as I think some of these are obvious and some are a little less so. DREAM and SNORE are probably the most clear and are what drew me to this category in the first place. DROOL is still pretty common, but TALK doesn’t scream something that happens in your sleep. Maybe it does if you or a roommate happens to do so a lot, but if you don’t this could be a little harder. It does happen frequently, but the word itself does not immediately imply “sleep.”

WICKED |
This one I was able to solve very quickly and very fast, mainly because I recognized three of them as movies that came out recently, and then I remembered a fourth when I was looking through the rest of the words. WICKED should hopefully catch your attention, even if you didn’t watch it as it was advertised everywhere. The others weren’t as marketed, although it would be hard to match the advertising, but most of them being fairly recent is a benefit to players as well as the fact that many of them just got Oscar nominations.

WHITE |
This category I never really thought about, although HAUNTED and FULL I think are the biggest red flags. They could easily go with words like POSSESSED and HELD, which could trick players into making other guesses. It is a little unfortunate, but I think the easier categories earlier in the puzzle make this one not as difficult. However, HAUNTED I think fits just as much as BORE does in some ways which could make this puzzle a quick loss for anyone not paying enough attention.
