Timothée Chalamet is set to play the role of a ping-pong player in Josh Safdie’s upcoming film Marty Supreme, a movie he says has very similar energy to another one of Safdie’s movies.
What did Chalamet say about Marty Supreme?
During a recent appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, Chalamet briefly brought up the movie, and said it had a similar energy to Uncut Gems, which Safdie co-directed alongside his brother, Benny.
“This crazy director, Josh Safdie, it has kind of that energy, that chaotic thing,” said Chalamet (via World of Reel). “It wasn’t like a low energy shoot. This was like 16-hour days for three months […] Josh put me through the wringer man.”
While the movie is about a ping-pong player, Chalamet said that some of the stunts and acting were more physical than some would assume. The actor said he wanted to show Safdie he could do it, and managed to come out of the “test” well.
“I saw him wanting me to do [the stunts]. And part of me is like, this feels like a test,” Chalamet said. “You know? And I wanted to show him. And then I now I feel like I’ve emerged from the other side with no broken bones or whatever.”
Along with Chalamet, Marty Supreme will feature an incredibly eclectic ensemble, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, Spenser Granese, and music artist Tyler, the Creator. The script was written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, both of whom are also producing the movie with Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet, and A24.
Safdie made his feature film directorial debut in 2008 with The Pleasure of Being Robbed. He then co-directed a number of movies with his brother, Benny, including 2017’s Good Time with Robert Pattinson and 2019’s Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler. With the two brothers having decided to explore their own solo careers, Benny is now working on The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, which is expected to be released in 2025.
Chalamet recently reprised his role as Paul Atreidies in Denis Villeneueve’s Dune: Part Two, which was released earlier this year. He’ll next be seen playing Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biographical drama A Complete Unknown, which will be released on December 25, 2024.
A release date for Marty Supreme has not yet been announced by A24.
