Netflix recently announced that its successful horror movie, Under Paris, is getting a sequel, but the new release is already facing a massive problem that is plaguing streaming services. Released in 2024, Under Paris is a French horror film which follows a marine biologist named Sophia who is forced to face her traumatic past when the violent shark named Lilith that killed her husband suddenly swims up the River Seine. Although Under Paris received mixed reviews, the film was a smash success for Netflix. It quickly became one of the best received non-English language films on the platform.
Now, Under Paris is officially getting a sequel, which is good news for fans of the film. Considering Under Paris’s shocking ending, the new installment will presumably see the return of Sophia as she attempts to track down Lilith and kill her once and for all. Under Paris 2 will almost certainly raise the stakes of the original movie, and feel even more apocalyptic. However, one problem remains for the upcoming sequel. Although Under Paris 2 has been confirmed, the movie itself won’t actually start filming for another year or even two.
Under Paris 2 Filming Update Continues The Delayed Release Trend With Streaming
What Other Movies & Shows Are Getting Delayed Releases
According to Variety, Under Paris 2 is definitely happening, but won’t begin filming until September 2025, and may even get pushed until 2026. In many ways, this brings the excitement for Under Paris 2 to a startling halt. Audiences may be anticipating the second shark disaster movie, but after two years, they may forget about the franchise completely. Unfortunately, Under Paris 2 isn’t the only streaming movie to suffer from this fate. Recently, countless movies and TV shows have been delayed by entire years, leaving viewers disappointed and potentially uninterested.

Under Paris’ most brutal deaths include some gruesome shark attacks, as well as a man-made disaster that kills countless people in the French capital.
One of the main reasons behind these delayed releases is the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which put a hold on filming, writing, and development for nearly six months. Because of this hiatus, many projects had to be pushed out to make up for the time lost. For example, the highly anticipated Stranger Things season 5 was pushed back to 2025. White Lotus season 3 and Cobra Kai season 6 were also affected. However, even a year after the strikes, movies like Under Paris 2 are still being pushed back, which could do more harm than good.
Why It’s Surprising Netflix Isn’t Fast-Tracking Under Paris 2
Will Under Paris 2 Be As Successful?
In reality, Under Paris 2’s delays are quite surprising considering how well the first movie did. Although the film wasn’t a critical darling, it accumulated more than 40 million views within its first week of streaming. Usually, Netflix jumps on these record-breaking projects, pushing them ahead of other movies to take advantage of their success. Yet, Under Paris 2 doesn’t seem to be getting this treatment, which means Netflix risks losing out on the audience’s interest. If Under Paris 2 doesn’t come out until 2026, or even 2027, viewers might have completely forgotten about the shark disaster film.
At this point, there is no telling how successful Under Paris 2 will be. Based on its delayed release schedule, there is a chance that the film will do less well than its predecessor, simply because too much time will have passed between movies. However, it could be that audiences don’t lose their interest and flock to the sequel in the same way they did the first movie. The quality of the sequel will also have an impact on how well it does. Either way, Under Paris is in a sticky situation that, hopefully, won’t ruin the entire franchise’s success.
