What Is ‘The Goonies’ About?
The adventure comedy tells the story about a group of kids in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. Mike “Mikey” Walsh (Astin), Richard “Data” Wang (Huy Quan), Clark “Mouth” Devereaux (Feldman), and Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen (Cohen), who call themselves “The Goonies,” are facing foreclosure of their homes by greedy land developers. When they come across a treasure map in Mikey’s home, they realize that finding the treasure might help them save their homes. And so, the boys set out on an epic journey to find the lost ship of the legendary pirate “One-Eyed Willy.” Along their way, they face several adverse situations and dangerous people like the Fratelli crime family, who are also after the treasure.
The setting of The Goonies is said to be loosely taken from the true story of the real-life Spanish ship, Santo Cristo de Burgo, which went missing off the coast of Oregon, sometime in the 1600s. Besides its treasure-hunting setup, the Goonies is essentially a fantastical tale about four young boys who set out on a wild and crazy adventure to save their homes. But in its underlying message, the film serves as a coming-of-age tale for its four main characters, where the boys discover their friendship and themselves, making it an inspiring story.
