Warning: Spoilers for Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay #3!One of the main members of the Avengers absolutely can’t stand Groot, the most beloved member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. While Groot has been a part of Marvel canon for decades, his MCU appearance made him an instant fan-favorite. Since then, he’s received numerous storylines in the Marvel Universe. However, there’s one member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes who doesn’t like him whatsoever.
In Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay #3 by Thomas Krajewski and Jason Muhr, Groot struggles to get Bruce Banner to Avengers Tower so he can find a cure for the zombie epidemic. When Banner’s unconscious body is nearly eaten by zombies, Groot hits him to wake him up and unleash the Hulk. Groot tries to explain what’s going on and to keep the Hulk focused on continuing their journey, but the Hulk instead gets aggravated with him for only saying “I am Groot” over and over.
The Hulk chases Groot out of the subway after Groot realizes that he just needs to talk to lead him to Avengers Tower, shouting that he’ll “make annoying tree man into toothpicks.”

It’s incredibly sad that Groot will never truly be able to have a meaningful friendship with the Hulk just because he can’t control what he says. “I am Groot” is literally the only thing he can say, and the Hulk doesn’t understand that it’s his form of language. What’s even worse is that the Hulk has a long list of grievances with his team over the years, including with his other half, Bruce Banner. However, that he gets enraged by Groot in particular shows that he’s the one hero he actively despises, no matter what happens.
There’s nothing holding the Hulk’s true feelings for Groot back.
The only thing that truly prevents Groot and the Hulk from never coming together seems to be Rocket Raccoon. Later in the same issue, Groot holds out a plush of his missing friend, to which the Hulk responds with a laugh after the doll says one of Rocket’s insults. Rocket can be a key to the Hulk and Groot getting along, since Rocket and Groot are practically inseparable. However, with Rocket out of the picture in this story, there’s nothing holding the Hulk’s true feelings for Groot back, as the two butt heads while trying to save Earth from the zombie plague.

The worst thing about this revelation about the Hulk’s feelings for the beloved Guardian is how it comes not too long after Groot had already experienced a devastating talk with Captain America about his performance on the team. Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay‘s first issue features a moment where Captain America voices disappointment in Groot, saying how he expects better from him as the heart of his interstellar team. It’s not nearly as harsh as the Hulk’s rejection of him, but it’s still enough to have Groot feeling like he’s not living up to being a proper hero.

In a way, Groot’s experience with the Avengers could make him consider leaving Earth to exclusively fight in space alongside the Guardians. However, that he uses the Hulk’s aggravations to carry out the mission and prove himself to Cap shows that he’ll do anything it takes to prove himself a true hero. Groot may have it rough when fighting alongside the Avengers, but even though some can’t stand him, this beloved Guardian of the Galaxy truly won’t stop until he shows why he’s loved by everyone, on and off the page.
