It looks as if Star Wars had quite the year on Disney+ in 2024, as new data has revealed that it occupied more than half of the streaming platform’s top 10 TV shows. Star Wars TV shows have been an integral part of Disney+ ever since its launch in 2019, with The Mandalorian serving as its flagship show. The true reliance Disney+ has on this franchise, however, has yet to be as glaringly obvious as it is now, looking back at this data from 2024.
Shared by Luminate, the data unveils Disney+’s top 10 TV shows, with five Star Wars shows (one ranking two different seasons) occupying these 10 slots.

With the dates of this data running from December 29, 2023 to December 31, 2024, it’s clear that Star Wars, even with shows that weren’t released in 2024, was absolutely critical to Disney+’s TV show success last year. The Acolyte is nearly at the top spot – a statistic that has shocked many, given the fact that The Acolyte was canceled in August 2024. What’s also quite impressive is the ranking of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, as the animated TV show has managed to surpass four different live-action TV shows – a difficult feat to achieve.
Star Wars Is Vital To The Success Of Disney Plus
The Streaming Platform Relies On This Franchise
The obvious takeaway from this data is that Disney+ absolutely needs Star Wars to succeed. This could be quite troublesome for Disney+ going forward, as it seems that, starting in 2025, Star Wars will only release one live-action TV show a year – thus interfering with the streaming platform’s dependency on the franchise and creating fewer opportunities for it to succeed in a given year. This type of dependency is indeed a promising testament to Star Wars’ excellence and cultural impact, but there is unfortunately another catch.
Our Take On Star Wars Viewership In 2024
On The Whole… It Wasn’t Great
While such apparent success for Star Wars seems promising, the reality is that this top 10 is based on a heavily decreased standard for Disney+ as a whole. When Luminate spoke exclusively to ScreenRant to review Star Wars’ 2024 run, they revealed that viewership for the streaming platform was at a dangerously low place in 2024 as it was. This was exemplified specifically by The Acolyte.
“The Acolyte was really the first one that I think you would say is legitimately poor performance comparative to the other Star Wars shows,” Doyle notes. He points out that viewership was 47% lower than Ahsoka in the first 26 weeks of release – and that’s a particularly troubling stat, because Ahsoka sits in the middle of the pack and is pretty solid in terms of viewership. “Now that said, this is still one of the biggest shows on Disney+ this year,” he continues. “It’s just lower than where that level has been set for the Star Wars titles.” The Acolyte‘s core problem was cost, because the show was simply too expensive for that viewership.
It looks like all these shows, The Acolyte most prominently, have performed very well, but in the grand scheme of things, they are skimming the surface of Star Wars’ previous standards for new releases. While The Bad Batch is particularly exempt from this as an animated TV series, as animation rarely ever performs as well as live-action, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew are both still far below what Star Wars has been used to over the years. Still, it stands that Star Wars is the core foundation of Disney+, which is both thrilling and daunting given its future plans.
