After two delays due to the tragic events that swept across the Los Angeles area this month, the nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards are now being announced, and that means it’s time to scrutinise the choices made by the Academy voters on the year’s best movies and performances. The big names we have been expecting to see on the ballot this year are Anora, Conclave, The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez, with a few nods for blockbuster movies like Inside Out 2 and Wicked.
Last year was the year of Oppenheimer, with Christopher Nolan finally grabbing his first Best Director gong, while his leading men Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. took home the Best Actor and Supporting Actor awards, as the film walked away with Best Picture. This time, it doesn’t seem like there’s quite the same chance of a sweep like this, but on Oscar night, we’ve come to expect the unexpected.
The Academy’s voters — which is made up of an exclusive cabal including actors, directors, and other prominent Hollywood figures — have until February 17 to vote. The 97th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on the night of Sunday, March 2 at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT, and delightfully, chaotically and quite surprisingly, will be hosted by Conan O’Brien, who is sure to keep things extremely flat, mundane and definitely not zany. The full list can be seen below:
