Secret Levelepisode 13 explored the now defunct world of Concord, with some incredible insights into a game that no longer has a platform. Secret Level is an incredible new series on Prime Video that adapts many beloved video games into short singular episodes in this anthology-style series. While these episodes primarily explore characters, worlds, and elements within games, they also dig deeper to provide backstories and expand the lore of the games, as can be seen in the Concord episode.


While Concord suffered an abysmal initial release, with a game that took more than $400 million and eight years to create eventually being dropped and then revoked in a two-week period, Secret Level manages to create a lot of intrigue around the game and its central story. While the actual gameplay was more similar to a battle royale style format, the episode takes a look at a pivotal moment in the universe of the game, that helped establish and define the future of their world. It follows the crew on the Implacable, as they undertake a critical mission which leads to their heroic demise.

The Implacable crew were in a tight situation as they found themselves squarely in the crosshairs of the Guild. The Guild controls the skies, due to their exclusive ownership of the maps, which allows them to be the sole controllers of buying, selling, and trading routes through space. With the invention of lightspeed travel, the entire universe is up for grabs, but only for those who know how to navigate it. However, the Implacable managed to steal this map, and moments before they were due to be captured by the Guild, they chose to transmit the map across public radio channels for anyone to download.

With this incredible act of defiance, they then attempt to escape their captors by flying directly into the terrifying Tempest, a massive space anomaly which behaves in a similar way to a black hole. This seems like almost certain death for the crew onboard the ship, but the final scene provides a glimmer of hope. In some kind of space thrift store, where goods are bought, sold, and bartered, a shopkeeper presents a prize piece of his collection, a small trinket which was aboard the Implacable when it flew into the Tempest. However, the fact that this piece is intact appears to confirm that something, or maybe even someone, could survive.

For an undisclosed duration, the Guild maintained their monopoly on space. This was an incredibly profitable business to be in, due to the fact that it meant anyone connected to the Guild could travel freely, and those who wanted to benefit from ventures in space needed to approach the Guild, and likely pay for access. However, the number of people benefitting from this system is certain to be miniscule. What the crew of the Implacable did by releasing the maps to the equivalent of the World Wide Web, is give everyone an opportunity to travel and work as they pleased.


No longer did the Guild hold all the power, and suddenly anyone who had a ship with intergalactic lightspeed abilities had more opportunities than ever before. Evidently, this leads up to how the world of Concord operates, with groups roaming for bounties and racing to see where they can find their next treasure. Without the Implacable and the crew’s incredible sacrifice, none of this would have been possible, and those who work as Freegunners in Concord would have been destined to some other fate, probably bound to the same planet they were born on.

The Implacable Paved The Way For Freegunners Everywhere

The Galactic Guide Is For Everyone

Freegunners are one of two primary factions from the Concord games. They are smugglers, mercenaries, and all around scoundrels. In many ways, it is appropriate to imagine them as a sort of space pirate. However, opposing these Freegunners stands the Guild. While the Guild lost their exclusive ability to travel the skies, they are unwilling to let go of that control completely. So, they establish checkpoints and routes along the galaxy’s prime routes. Despite this, freegunners, with the aid of the galactic guide, are able to naviagte space while avoiding these Guild checkpoints, allowing them to get to their next big spoil with relative ease.

However, Freegunners everywhere avail of this opportunity, and often, there is a rush to the destination which leads to an all-out battle. In Secret Level episode 13, it appears as though the Implacable were hoping to use the guide for their own gain, without any notion of making things free and complicating their own efforts to smuggle and make money. However, the Guild’s meddling meant that captain Cassidy Taimak opted to make the information free as a way to still win, despite being cornered and pushed towards near certain death by the Guild.

When Concord was officially released by Sony, the game suffered incredibly low sales figures, and Sony made the executive decision to halt the servers and refund everyone who purchased the game just two weeks after the game was launched. So, there is a lot that remains unsaid and unexplored about Concord that cannot be confirmed. However, the episode does tie in a lot with the details that were shared in the games’ weekly cutscenes, and the overall story behind Freegunners versus the Guild in Concord.

The rivalry between these factions, the legend of the Implacable, the reverance that new Freegunners show towards these pioneers, as seen by the crew of the Northstar. All of this is a direct reference from the game to the screen. Another key element that ties them together is the small trinket which appears in the final moments of Secret Level episode 13. In Concord, this same figurine is brought aboard the Northstar by Lennox, who recounts a snippet of the Implacable’s story in the Week 1 cutscene from the game. All things considered, Secret Level episode 13 did a great job paying tribute to a game that is no longer available, but at least the episode will allow it to live on.
