You season 5 will see the return of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), and updates confirm that the last season may be the most thrilling of all. For four seasons, Joe has traveled across the United States and Europe in pursuit of his romantic obsessions, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Coming from humble beginnings, the charismatic serial killer has had to rely on his cunning and resourcefulness, but now that he’s got his girlfriend Kate Lockwood’s (Charlotte Ritchie) billions at his fingertips, season 4 ended with Joe on top of the world.

Netflix released You season 4 in two parts, with part 2 releasing on March 9, 2023. In addition to accessing a fortune, Joe was able to pin all his crimes on his student, amateur sleuth Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman). Though he and Kate took a vow to “keep each other good“, season 4’s final moments saw the reappearance of Joe’s dark alter ego Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), confirming that Joe has no intentions of stopping his murderous ways. Joe may be living a good life going into You season 5, but he won’t stay there for long.

After many months of waiting for answers, the latest news arrives in the form of the release date and trailer for You season 5. Highlighting the fact that season 5 will be the last, the trailer is narrated by Joe as he talks to this season’s unfortunate object of his affection. Underscoring the narration is imagery from the past as Joe returns to his old stomping ground, Mooney’s Rare & Used Books, and remembers past loves and many of his victims as well. Joe also returns to his infamous glass prison in the book store’s basement, where he is clearly plotting more nefarious deeds.

the first teaser makes it clear that Joe’s final act will take place where it all began.

While the teaser doesn’t give away much of anything regarding the final season, it essentially serves to reveal that You will return on April 24, 2025. Future trailers will likely give more important information about the upcoming episodes, but the first teaser makes it clear that Joe’s final act will take place where it all began.

You season 5 has officially been confirmed, and it will be the show’s final outing. Debuting on Lifetime in 2018, You faced early cancelation as the network decided not to renew it after season 1. However, You became a hit when it was released on Netflix, and the streaming platform kept the show going all the way to season 5, where it has the chance to reach a properly fitting conclusion.

Filming wrapped on the fifth and final season in August 2024, and it would take a few more months for Netflix to announce anything regarding its release. Long thought to be arriving in 2024, Netflix eventually revealed the 2025 release window for You, before eventually narrowing it to a premiere on April 24, 2025.

The show starting and ending in New York City seems like a fitting conclusion, but Joe’s past in the Big Apple will likely be his downfall.

While Joe ended season 4 with unlimited affluence and a squeaky-clean new image, it’s not likely to stay that way. Though she will not be part of You season 5’s creative team, Gamble teased Joe’s You fate, saying that a frequent conversation between her, the show’s writers, Berlanti, and Badgley himself is that it would be “nice to end his arc with some form of justice.”

“We have kept scrupulous track of everybody who knows anything about Joe who’s not dead. There are some very smart people who are alive. Some of them are in jail, and some of them are basically in witness protection, but there’s no reason to believe he’s safe.” (via TVLine)

The show starting and ending in New York City seems like a fitting conclusion, but Joe’s past in the Big Apple will likely be his downfall. Detective Marquez (Nava Mau) is a new character for season 5, and she might be the one determined to bring him down once and for all.

There was a small teaser released in June 2024 in the Netflix “Tudum Teaser” format. This teaser has Penn Badgley talking to fans and thanking them for helping to make it a success. He then gives two major hints about the new upcoming You season 5. First, Badgley mentions that Joe is returning to New York, and second, he hints at an adversary for Joe to face in the final season. It’s unclear if You season 5 will introduce a new conflict for Joe, or if his past will return to haunt him.

In January 2025, Netflix finally revealed the release date for You season 5 through an exciting teaser trailer. Narrated by Joe as he recounts his past loves while he walks the streets of New York City, the lovestruck killer eventually finds his way to his old stomping ground, Mooney’s Used & Rare Books. Things take an even more dramatic turn as Joe returns to his infamous glass cage (kept in Mooney’s basement) where he remembers many of the unfortunate souls who found themselves trapped there.
