Dungeons & Dragons hasn’t seen the last of The Legend of Drizzt books yet, as one key detail from Lolth’s Warrior proves. This 2023 novel was the finale of The Way of the Drow subseries, and it paid off many arcs that the wider series had been touching on for a long time. In many ways, after Lolth’s Warrior, The Legend of Drizzt felt considerably finished, leading many fans to speculate that it was over. The Companions of the Hall reached a satisfying ending. But there are many signs that R.A. Salvatore has Drizzt stories left in him.

Drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden had a relatively small part in Lolth’s Warrior compared to the earlier Legend of Drizzt books, suggesting that perhaps he had run his course. In November 2023, Salvatore hadn’t renewed the contract for another subseries, although he published a standalone Drizzt audiobook novella in October 2024 (Reddit). But Salvatore unveiled a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it update on his website in September – hidden at the bottom of the homepage, “The Legend of Drizzt will continue.” And that makes sense, as Lolth’s Warrior may have resolved key arcs but left some threads so unresolved that another full subseries must be incoming.

Kimmuriel’s arc in Lolth’s Warrior feels too incomplete for the release to be the final book in The Legend of Drizzt. Drizzt and his companions got a much-needed happy ending in Lolth’s Warrior, after traveling, dying, and coming back to life together since 1988. By the end of Way of the Drow, Drizzt and his scimitars found peace, aligning with his friends after multiple deaths and revivals. In this sense, it almost seems a shame to pick up the series where Lolth’s Warrior left off, as some fans have pointed out. However, Kimmuriel can’t end like this.

It’s likely that R.A. Salvatore knows it. It would be unlike him to end such an important character so heartbreakingly. Character deaths have appeared out of the blue before in The Legend of Drizzt series, but often they feel earned, with something of a swan song put in place around their exit from. Kimmuriel got neither real death nor real life, dying then assimilating with the illithid hive mind. The series started to feel like The Legend of Kimmuriel over its last few books, so for it to leave him disembodied would be powerful but lack a level of closure.

Kimmuriel’s death doesn’t seem final in The Legend of Drizzt, suggesting that R.A. Salvatore may bring him back from the dead like he did multiple characters before. The Legend of Drizzt is known for bringing characters back from the dead, and it hasn’t always worked. As is often the case in high fantasy, a wide range of characters in The Legend of Drizzt results in lots of minor characters being used disposably as plot devices, being killed off to make a point regarding a major character. If they can make a comeback, Kimmuriel can too.

Kimmuriel was far from a minor character by the time of Lolth’s Warrior. Even if the dead minor characters occasionally made comebacks in the narrative, most minor character deaths could be taken reasonably seriously in The Legend of Drizzt. That could sometimes feel jarring, contrasted with the major characters’ major plot armor. Since Drizzt met the Companions of the Hall in Icewind Dale, their plot armor revived them from death more than once. If any character has earned plot armor, it is Kimmuriel, and readers can most likely look forward to him getting his body back somehow.

Kimmuriel Isn’t Dead, So Bringing Him Back Wouldn’t Cheapen The Story

There’s Still Lots Of Scope In Kimmuriel’s Arc

Bringing characters back from the dead isn’t always effective in the Drizzt books, but bringing Kimmuriel back would be the right move. Plot armor can get silly in The Legend of Drizzt, but keeping a series going this long is no mean feat, and it’s understandable for suspension of disbelief to falter at times. Some characters are better off staying dead, but as Dinin was a huge joy to have back from drider life, Kimmuriel would be welcomed back by readers, Bregan D’aerthe, and Jarlaxle alike. Maybe Jarlaxle more than anyone.

Kimmuriel is one character that does need a comeback, especially as he isn’t quite actually dead. His death resulted in him joining the hive mind of the beings he had studied for years. In this sense, his ending felt appropriate. He also received major character development leading up to his final heroics. Leaving Kimmuriel in the hive mind wouldn’t be a terrible move, it would be the logical result of his emotional growth. However, if The Legend of Drizzt tells readers anything, it is that heroics are rewarded. And Kimmuriel deserves his body back.

This would also be the perfect next step in his growth. Yharaskrik the illithid, who worked with Kimmuriel before, demonstrated the ability to find a new host body after traveling the astral plane. Kimmuriel’s hard work could pay off in the form of a new host body, or some kind of psionic revival of his old body. Lolth’s Warrior left Dinin with huge redemptive potential, Zak on the verge of romantasy, and Artemis seeking a new quest. But oddly, Kimmuriel’s limbo hit the hardest. It seems almost inevitable that Dungeons & Dragons will let Salvatore address Kimmuriel in more Drizzt books.
