A brand new TV spot for James Gunn Superman has dropped early to DC Fan First members. The spot features new footage of Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and, most importantly, the best look yet at David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in flight. The 30-second teaser, which also uses a reimagined version of John Williams’ Superman score, showcases both scenes from the previously released full-length trailer and a few new shots. It opens on the same image of Clark Kent/Superman badly beaten up and whistling for Krypto the Superdog’s help, before transitioning to the hero protecting a young girl.
In a new clip, Lex Luthor is seen arriving in the Arctic, possibly to locate Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Shots from the last trailer include a fire-breathing monster attacking Metropolis, Superman punching through what appears to be a glass cage, a young boy raising a Superman flag, Superman holding a damaged robot, him fighting on a baseball field, Krypto rescuing Clark, and Superman and Lois sharing a dance as they lift off of the ground, among others.
Perhaps the standout moment from this new TV spot is the footage of Superman flying. As with the shot of Lex, Superman is shown in the Arctic, and he is seen flying both from behind and facing forward as he weaves around glaciers. The new Superman footage lasts for about 4 seconds, giving a short but valuable look at what Clark’s flying will look like in the film.
According to Gunn, Superman’s flying scenes took inspiration from those of Top Gun: Maverick. In order to achieve a more realistic flying effect, the production employed the use of drones. Per Gunn, “being able to shoot stuff in the sky like that is really hard,” but the modern technique helped sell the illusion that a man could fly.

In the brief scene, two perspectives of Superman’s flight are shown, from the front and the back. The ability to show multiple angles as well as motion is likely the effect of using drones. Additionally, Corenswet’s appearance is fairly normal, avoiding a common pitfall of CGI flight sequences that can look uncanny or like a PlayStation 2 render. No mid-flight fight sequences were shown during the spot, however, so it remains to be seen how the drone method impacts action sequences.
What The New Superman Trailer Means For The DC Movie
With the matter of how the DCU movie will handle Superman’s ability to fly being a crucial part of both the upcoming film and conversations around it, the decision to release a trailer with a more dedicated action flight shot makes particular sense. While it’s not a long scene, the moment does allow viewers to get a better look at what’s to come in this regard, and ensures the release stays a topic of discussion.
On a similar note, the new trailer also teases more of a potential plotline in the Arctic, both through Superman’s flight scene and Lex Luthor seemingly appearing in a similar location. Given Superman is first shown in the original Superman movie trailer lying beaten in the show before summoning Krypto, it’s possible these moments lead up to that point, or otherwise relate to one another, since so few other preview scenes appear to take place in the same location.
On the other side of things, the new trailer is an interesting look at what further previews of the upcoming DC Universe movie might look like. Since the teaser notably reuses some of the same preview shots as the previous trailer, it’s possible this is how the next trailers will also handle things, with new moments and segments steadily delivered alongside reminders of what some of the previously shown scenes look like. This could theoretically ensure new teases are released more frequently, as they wouldn’t have to strictly only use new unseen footage from the film.

Superman’s flight ability is an essential part of the character, and for a film about him to succeed, the audience must be able to suspend their disbelief. A key example of this is Christopher Reeve’s take on the character. Though the visual effects of his era were far from convincing, the actor drew from his experience as a pilot to sell the illusion that he was flying, and it worked. Judging by the positivity in the YouTube comments for the TV spot, Gunn might just do the same with the modern techniques used in Superman.
