With Charlie Cox set to appear as Daredevil in the new Spider-Man TV show, the possibility of additional Marvel-Netflix heroes gets teased by the Marvel Cinematic Universe showrunner. While Marvel Studios is set to finally explore Peter Parker’s origin story in the MCU, it will be in the form of animation in the new Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man TV show. As the upcoming MCU release takes place in a different reality in the MCU multiverse, it opens the door for new depictions of other familiar Marvel players.
ScreenRant recently interviewed Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell, where he was asked if the new MCU TV show could include appearances of the Netflix-Marvel heroes, since Cox will be voicing a new version of Daredevil in the series. Trammell stressed that with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, “nothing is impossible,” but that it would rely on the story making sense, as he stated the following:
Jeff Trammell: Again, I would say nothing is impossible. I think [it] depends on where the story takes us. There’s a lot of people around Peter right now, but I’m very interested in continuing to expand our world. So if a Luke or a Jessica [Jones] or someone else were to show up down the line, would I be against that? Absolutely not. I’m totally cool with that. Also, there’s Avengers in our world. So, who is to say, can show up later too? Who knows…
Based on Trammell’s response, there is no reason why Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man couldn’t feature the other Defenders down the line, as long as there is an actual reason for them to appear in the series. It’s key to remember that the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man story will focus on a teenage Peter who has just begun his journey as a superhero. Having him already get involved with more Defenders characters than Cox’s Daredevil would feel very rushed, and should be earned once he gets further into his career as Spider-Man.
Since the Marvel-Netflix shows are now canon to the MCU, it leaves the door open for those actors to play their Earth-616 and alternative variants in various Marvel Studios productions. Krysten Ritter has been on the record several times stating that she is more than ready to come back to the MCU as Jessica Jones, with Mike Colter and Finn Jones also being open to playing Luke Cage and Iron Fist again. A future season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man could also be a solid platform to slowly integrate those actors back into the MCU, with the hopes of them getting their live-action returns, too.
While time will tell if any other Marvel-Netflix heroes other than Daredevil will pop up in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, it’s at least exciting to know that the option is on the table, especially since the show is already set to return for season 2. With several actors having expressed a willingness to reprise their roles, it would be fun to see how their characters could be depicted in this universe in comparison to their Earth-616 counterparts. But for now, fans can catch the early days of the Marvel web-slinger in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premieres on Wednesday, January 29, with the first two episodes being released on Disney+.
