Kit Harington’s Game Of Thrones Replacement Show With 90% On RT Makes His Shelved Spinoff Even Sadder

Kit Harington’s Game of Thrones replacement show is proving an impressive follow-up for the actor, but that realization only makes his shelved Jon Snow spinoff even sadder. Harington is one of the most recognizable stars from HBO’s hit fantasy series, as his performance as Jon Snow made him a household name. Perhaps it’s no surprise that HBO considered making a spinoff based on his character, but in April 2024, Harington revealed that the Jon Snow sequel is no longer in development.

This continues a trend of HBO canceling its most intriguing Game of Thrones spinoffs, but Harington has other projects to focus on. Since bidding farewell to Westeros, the actor has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021’s Eternals and appeared in several other TV shows and movies. The most notable is HBO’s Industry, and while Harington has only been in five episodes so far, they’re a sad reminder of how great a Jon Snow series could have been.

Kit Harington’s HBO Return In Industry Is Great (But Jon Snow Would Be Better)

A Game Of Thrones Sequel Has So Much Potential If Done Well

Industry‘s focus on the drama within London’s financial sector makes it a far cry from Game of Thrones, but the show is probably the closest thing Harington has to a replacement for the fantasy series. Harington joined the cast of Industry in season 3, and the show allows him to flex his acting range. His character, Henry Muck, is nothing like Jon Snow. But Harington plays him in a way that makes him equal parts charming and grating, reminding us how skilled he is at capturing characters’ nuances.

HBO Resurrecting Kit Harington’s Jon Snow Sequel Would Make An 8-Year-Old Game Of Thrones Quote Infinitely More Tragic

HBO hasn’t completely shut the door on Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spinoff with Kit Harington, but it would only add to the tragedy of the character.

While Industry is an entertaining show, and Harington’s character adds to that, a Game of Thrones spinoff would be even better. It’s no secret that Game of Thrones season 8 ended the series on a divisive note, and a sequel could attempt to patch its legacy. There aren’t many characters who’d be able to carry that, but Jon Snow could effectively lead such a spinoff — and that’s at least partly due to Harington’s compelling screen presence.

The shelving of Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spinoff is disappointing no matter how you spin it, but Harington’s return to HBO really highlights what could have been. Both the network and the actor are known for producing high-quality work, and it would be nice to see them collaborate on a project set in the Game of Thrones universe again. Seeing Harington step into a much different role also reveals how much more he could do with Jon; the character would undoubtedly be changed forever by the events of season 8, opening up all sorts of possibilities.

Sadly, it looks like we won’t get to see Harington dig into his character’s trauma any time soon, as the Jon Snow sequel is not currently in the cards. Although HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys raised the possibility that they could “try again” (via Deadline), it’s hard to feel hopeful about the Game of Thrones spinoff. Fortunately, we have Harington’s other projects, like Industry, to look forward to.
