Jon Hamm’s True-Story-Based Comedy About Adults Playing Tag Finding Renewed Streaming Success 6 Years Later

Jon Hamm is best known as a prolific TV actor. He has been nominated for eighteen Emmys, primarily for his acting, winning his first Emmy in 2015 for Outstanding Lead Actor for playing Don Draper in Mad Men. More recently, he was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Fargo and The Morning Show, respectively. Late last year, Hamm debuted a role in the Taylor Sheridan series Landman, a new series that has become incredibly popular.

Though Hamm’s biggest acclaim has come from television, the actor has also had a number of film roles. He first played an unnamed role in the Clint Eastwood movie Space Cowboys, but has since gone on to have bigger parts in films such as The Town and Million Dollar Arm. More recently, Hamm’s cinematic roles have included parts in Transformers One, Unfrosted, Mean Girls, and Top Gun Maverick. Hamm also acted in a 2018 based-on-a-true-story comedy that is now finding new life on streaming.

Tag has now become a streaming success. This 2018 action-comedy is about a group of adult friends who decide to play an elaborate game of Tag that sees them have to go to extreme lengths, including traveling across the country. In addition to Hamm, Tag features a leading cast including Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Jeremy Renner, Lil Rey Howery, Annabelle Wallis, Isla Fisher, and Hannibal Buress. Tag received mixed reviews at the time of its release, getting a 55% among critics. It had a decent showing at the box office, grossing $78.2 million worldwide on an estimated $28 million budget.

As per FlixPatrol, Tag is now finding success on the Prime Video charts. After being on the rise for several days, Tag now holds the no. 3 spot on Prime Video’s top 10 films in the U.S. today (January 13). This comes after the film first appeared on the charts on January 9, coming in at no. 8, before steadily rising to the no. 7 position on January 10, the no. 6 position on January 11, and then maintaining a no. 3 position both yesterday and today.

Our Take On Tag’s Sudden Resurgence

Two Of The Actors Are From Taylor Sheridan Shows

If there is one person to thank for Tag‘s return to fame, it is Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan is the creator behind both Landman and Mayor of Kingstown, both of which had seasons in late 2024. Landman features Hamm and Mayor of Kingstown features Renner, leaving both actors fresh in many viewers’ minds. The success of these shows has likely cascaded onto Tag to make it a successful show, exhibiting once again how much Sheridan has influenced the industry in recent years.
