Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox opened up about the upheaval behind the scenes of the Disney+ series, which led to the entire creative team being replaced. The show takes place in the same continuity as Netflix’s Daredevil, and original cast members Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, and Jon Bernthal join Cox in reprising their roles. Cox previously appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law following the cancelation of Daredevil.
In an interview with SFX, Cox unpacked his perspective on the troubled production of Daredevil: Born Again. The actor explained that “there was a U-turn after the strike, where [they] were headed in one direction, which was interesting and valid.” The original reason the show was different from the Netflix version was simple: “if we’re coming back after all these years, we don’t want to just do exactly the same thing.” Per Cox, “Marvel looked at the episodes and knew it wasn’t quite working.“
After that, the production team “shot a whole new pilot, and they reorganized what [they] had filmed to make it feel more like the show [they] had shot all those years previously.” Cox praised the creative decision, stating: “Given what a Herculean task that was, it’s very impressive what they achieved.“
Also speaking with SFX, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane echoed Cox’s sentiment. The writer explained: “At the very end of the Netflix show, Foggy, Karen and Matt had a dream written out on the back of a napkin. We start with that dream. It’s not a dream that needs too much explanation; three good friends go into business together.” Scardapane clarified that while the original version of the series “had some really strong points, […] it wasn’t feeling in line with what Daredevil had been established to be.” The overhaul ultimately restored the trajectory established in the Netflix series.
Though the production of Daredevil: Born Again was troubled, Cox seems confident that the changes in the writer’s room got the show back on track. Moreover, the series was retooled to more closely align with the Netflix adaptation, which makes sense now that the Defenders Saga has been officially declared canon to the MCU. This decision was likely made both to please long-term fans and to maintain the tone associated with the character, potentially replicating the success of the Netflix show.

D’Onofrio has also discussed the changes behind the scenes of Daredevil: Born Again. The actor explained: “when we finally figured out how to do this show, it was so exciting, and to really play it the way that Charlie and I always wanted to continue.” More explicitly, D’Onofrio stated that “a lot of us involved in the first iteration were really yearning for a better way, and it worked out.”
The enthusiasm behind the scenes of Daredevil: Born Again makes the long-awaited return of Cox’s Daredevil that much more intriguing. Though the Netflix Marvel series were not all hits, Daredevil is one of the best shows the platform has released, and if Disney+ recreates that energy, it will likely be a hit with fans. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how Daredevil: Born Again resonates with audiences as well as how it factors into the broader MCU.
