How I Turned My Roommate Into a ‘90 Day Fiancé’ Superfan

[ad_1]

Ever since I was a young teen, reality TV has always had a special place in my heart, but I know my taste isn’t for everyone. My love for reality TV started in the early 2000s with shows like Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, Tila Tequila: A Shot of Love, and The Hills. Even then, finding someone who had the same passion for reality TV was tough. My love has only grown stronger over the years and I still find myself binge-watching popular shows like 90 Day Fiancé, Love is Blind, and Below Deck. However, sometimes watching these shows on my own gets boring and lonely.

For a few years, I tried to get my roommate, Gary, into some of my shows, but he was resistant. Reality TV wasn’t for him, and he found some love stories to be trashy and “over the top.” But, with a little coaxing, I was able to convince him to binge-watch some 90 Day Fiancé with me, and I was ecstatic with the results. Not only did he change his mind about his opinions on reality TV, I turned him into maybe even a bigger fan than I am. Here’s exactly what I did to turn my roommate into a mega 90 Day Fiancé superfan.

I Watched ’90 Day Fiancé’ in His Presence But Didn’t Pressure Him

This is the oldest psychological trick in the book, and it’s one that I learned from past relationships. Sometimes, if I’m too forceful about an idea or pressure someone too much, they get turned off. This is a normal part of being human, as I become resistant when I feel backed into a corner as well. So, instead of trying to persuade someone, it’s better to take a more passive approach. Simply put, I would watch the show in my roommate’s presence, but I wouldn’t talk to him about it. I’d enjoy the show just as if I was alone and waited for him to come to me on his own.

Faith, wake up and smell the coffee.

For instance, Gary’s favorite pastime is cooking. He loves to cook dinner for us after work because he helps him wind down. So usually, while he cooks, I’d put the show on. After a few weeks of 90 Day Fiancé background music, I noticed Gary was catching on to storylines, learning names and even sharing his opinion on how Jasmine Pineda needed to “get it together.” That’s when I knew he was subtly hooked, and it was time for the second part of this strategy.

I Highlighted the Most Outrageous and Tumultuous ’90 Day Fiancé’ Stars

Admittedly, this is a slow process. I really enjoy 90 Day Fiancé and I wanted my roommate to fully understand the experience. Once I saw his piqued interest, I asked him if he would be open to watching a few full episodes with me. I was surprised when he said yes. Now the trick here was to show Gary the best parts of 90 Day Fiancé. I first got into 90 Day Fiancé because the clips and memes from Big Ed Brown’s relationship with Rosemarie Vega had me reeling.

So much so, that I started the series in the later seasons before starting from the beginning. That’s how I hooked Gary. I showed Gary the most tumultuous seasons and stars. I played all of Big Ed and Angela Deem’s appearances. I started Jasmine and Gino Palazzolo‘s storyline back from the beginning in Before the 90 Days Season 5. And I also showed him some of my favorite couples that proved 90 Day Fiancé wasn’t only for frills, like Alexei and Loren Brovarnik.

In the end, the most crucial part of this plan is to know the person well and introduce the content in a way that’s not too overstimulating or forceful. Luckily, the plan worked. Some days, I come home and see that he had already watched the most recent episode of 90 Day Fiancé without me, so we have a new set of issues now. But either way, I’m glad to have someone to gossip with about 90 Day Fiancé, and I’m can’t wait to add more reality shows to the list. 90 Day Fiancé and its spin-off series air on TLC, and are available to stream on Max in the U.S.
