Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for From Season 3.At last, we finally have a face to the ultimate evil entity in control of the Town of From. The Season 3 Finale, “Revelations: Chapter Two,” reveals a yellow-suited man, credited only as The Man in the Yellow Suit and portrayed by Douglas E. Hughes. Since the first season, From has been hinting at a puppet master in control of the Town. While some theorized the evil creatures that roamed the town at night were some type of fae folk of ancient folklore, the events in Season 3 show the creatures’ actions are way too cunning and specific for them to be feral fae. The truth is that From has been teasing its big bad, The Man in the Yellow Suit, all along. It’s time to unpack the reveal of The Man in the Yellow Suit.
Viewers might recall Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey) using a radio tower at Colony House in the first season finale, “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” when he attempts to call out a distress signal. Jim manages to make contact with a mysterious voice through the radio, who identifies him by name and then ominously informs Jim, “Your wife shouldn’t be digging that hole, Jim.” The message is clear: Someone is watching and observing everything that’s been happening in the Town, and that individual is not benevolent to the survivors who are trapped there.
The Season 3 finale reveals the voice speaking to Jim belongs to The Man in the Yellow Suit. When Jim meets the villain in person, he reiterates to Jim, “Your wife shouldn’t have dug that hole, Jim,” before he brutally ends Jim’s life. Notably, The Man in the Yellow Suit is not like the other creatures who roam the Town at night. He attacked Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) and murdered Jim in broad daylight. The nighttime rules of other creatures do not apply to him.
Miranda Had Visions of The Man in the Yellow Suit
Early in Season 3, during her trip back to the natural world, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) goes to the home of Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord), meeting Victor’s father, Henry (Robert Joy). There, she learns that Victor’s mother, Miranda (Sarah Booth), had dreams and visions of the Town years before she, Victor, and Victor’s sister Eloise were trapped there. Among the paintings is a drawing of The Man in the Yellow Suit. The Season 3 finale also reveals that Tabitha was Miranda in her previous life. She and Jade Herrera (David Alpay) have both been to the Town in their past lives, and they are part of a cycle likely intended to break its curse. The Man in the Yellow Suit is at the center of that curse.
The Man in the Yellow Suit Is Behind the Creatures
Previous episodes hint at the ghostly children being more benevolent entities who need help from Jade and Tabitha to solve the mystery of the town. The Season 3 finale also depicts Fatima Hassan (Pegah Ghafoori) explaining to Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore) the origin of the creatures and children. She says, “I saw what they did. Those things that come out at night. I saw what they are. They sacrificed their children because ‘It’ promised them that they would live forever.” This occurs right after Fatima gives birth to a pod creature that hatches and grows into a fully-grown Smiling Creature, who was believed to be killed by Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) in Season 2. The creatures are the original residents of the Town who sacrificed their children to The Man in the Yellow Suit. As The Man in the Yellow Suit says before he ends Jim’s life, “Knowledge comes with a cost.”
The Man in the Yellow Suit’s existence would explain the creatures’ changing tactics earlier in Season 3. In the Season 3 premiere, “Shatter,” they set a trap for Boyd, putting him in handcuffs and forcing him to watch as they torture and mutilate Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy). They echo the words Boyd said when no one was present in the Season 2 finale, “You said this place couldn’t break you. Do you remember that Boyd?” This suggests that The Man in the Yellow Suit hears and knows all that happens in the Town, and he is the one who commands the creatures. When Boyd meets the imprisoned Martin (Robert Verlaque) in the Season 2 episode, “Strangers in a Strange Land,” Martin says the creatures plaguing the town are only the tip of the spear, implying that something even worse exists beyond them. He is probably referring to The Man in the Yellow Suit.
Who Is The Man in the Yellow Suit?
While he takes the physical form of a thin older man, The Man in the Yellow Suit appears to possess a high level of omniscience, super-strength, immortality, and invulnerability, much like the creatures. However, The Man in the Yellow suit operates during the daytime, in contrast to the creatures, who are nocturnal. So, who is this guy? The Devil? A malevolent entity? An alien? Well, the yellow suit evokes the mythic character known as The King in Yellow, who was first conceived by writer Robert W. Chambers in his collection of short stories.
The King in Yellow is typically depicted as a mysterious nonhuman being and a bringer of madness and doom. When you think about the Town, the creatures, and the untold horror the Town’s survivors deal with daily, The Man in the Yellow Suit fits the profile of The King in Yellow. That’s not a direct answer as to his identity, but it’s a working theory to start with. He could still exist as some type of Eldritch abomination or something beyond human understanding, but the yellow suit and aura of malevolence appear to indirectly reference Chambers’ The King in Yellow. With the appearance of The Man in the Yellow Suit, viewers finally have a face for the big bad they can root against in the next season of From.
