Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) is one of the most important characters in Severance. In addition to Arquette, the cast of Severance includes Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, and Christopher Walken, all of whom return for the long-awaited season 2. When season 1 was released in 2022, the Apple TV+ show received critical acclaim, and it is still regarded as one of the best series on the streaming platform.

Severance revolves around a reality where employees at Lumon Industries can undergo a procedure known as severance. This procedure causes severed employees to only remember their work lives when they are at work and to only remember their outside lives when they are not at work. The work self is known as an Innie, while the outside self is known as an Outie. After a nearly three-year hiatus following the cliffhanger of the Severance season 1 ending, season 2 resumes the stories of Cobel and the other characters following their game-changing developments.

Harmony Cobel Is The Severed Floor Manager At Lumon Industries In Severance

She Is Mark’s Boss

Cobel manages the floor at Lumon Industries where severed employees work, including Mark S (Scott), Helly R (Lower), Irving B (Turturro), Dylan G (Cherry), and Burt G (Walken). There are multiple departments on this floor, from Macrodata Refinement to Optics, although season 1 mostly focuses on Macrodata Refinement, as this is the department where Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan work. Cobel has a cold demeanor when interacting with her employees, with the height of any warmth being when she offers a handshake upon request.

Severance Season 2 Review: I’m Stunned The Brilliant Apple TV+ Series Actually Surpassed Its Excellent First Season

Severance season 2 continues to perfect the mystery box series formula with perfectly planted answers that raise more harrowing questions.

Cobel is loyal to Lumon and expresses reverence for the company’s founder, Kier Eagan. Cobel is also concerned about Mark and his peers being unable to meet their refinement quotas. She works closely with the severed floor supervisor, Mr. Milchick (Tillman) and the floor’s head of security, Doug Graner (Michael Cumpsty), to ensure that work is proceeding as expected, and to ensure there are not any breaches in security. Meanwhile, Cobel has her own agenda, and takes a particular interest in Mark and the severed floor’s wellness counselor, Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman).

Cobel’s Other Identity As Mrs. Selvig Explained

Mrs. Selvig Is Mark’s Neighbor

Outside of work, Cobel lives next door to Mark and pretends to be his kindly neighbor, Mrs. Selvig. Due to Mark being severed, he has no memory of Cobel when he is outside of work, and therefore does not recognize that Cobel is his boss. Cobel is not severed, though. She knows who Mark is and makes an active choice to keep a close eye on him, allowing her to see Mark’s life both inside and outside Lumon as she pursues her own agenda.

Cobel is revealed to be Mark’s neighbor at the end of season 1, episode 1.

As Mrs. Selvig, she furthers embeds herself in Mark’s life by posing as a lactation consultant who helps Mark’s sister, Devon (Dichen Lachman), after she gives birth. When the Overtime Contingency Protocol is used to allow Mark’s Innie to be conscious on the outside, Mark sees that Cobel is in his life as Mrs. Selvig. He accidentally refers to her as “Ms. Cobel,” which makes her realize that Mark’s Innie is awake. Before the Overtime Contingency Protocol is shut down, Mark tells Devon that his boss and Mrs. Selvig are the same person.

Why Ms. Cobel Is Suspended From Lumon In Severance Season 1

Helly Nearly Died On Her Watch

Despite her dedication to the company, the Lumon Board suspends Cobel when they discover that she did not report Helly trying to take her own life. Helly’s Outie is Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon CEO James Eagan, and became severed as part of a campaign to legalize the severance procedure. Helly tried to take her own life after finding no other way to escape the severed floor. Since Helly cannot be punished as a member of the Eagan family, and because it would be debilitating to the efforts to legalize severance, Lumon chooses to punish Cobel instead.

She finds a potential way back into the company when she realizes that Mark’s Outie is awake and notifies Mr. Milchick, who shuts down the Overtime Contingency Protocol.

Cobel’s activities as Mrs. Selvig also contribute to her suspension, as did her claim that Severance‘s Petey reintegrated despite being severed. As repeatedly stated by the Board’s representative, Natalie (Sydney Cole Alexander), the Board does not acknowledge reintegration. After being suspended, Cobel tears down the shrine in her basement built to honor Kier Eagan. However, she finds a potential way back into the company when she realizes that Mark’s Outie is awake and notifies Mr. Milchick, who shuts down the Overtime Contingency Protocol. This sets up Cobel’s role in Severance season 2.
