Leeds United stayed two points clear at the Championship summit with a 0-0 draw at Burnley that kept the hosts three points behind them.

Wales winger Daniel James went closest to breaking the deadlock with the only attempt on target between the teams, forcing goalkeeper James Trafford to tip his 89th-minute volley over the crossbar.

Zian Flemming sent two headers wide during the first half and Leeds wideman Jayden Bogle proved a persistent threat, but the contest was a largely forgettable one as the third-placed Clarets extended their unbeaten run to 17 matches in all competitions.

Burnley vs Leeds: Championship table tight at top

Scott Parker’s side remain unbeaten at home since the former England midfielder replaced Vincent Kompany in July, drawing eight of their 14 league games at Turf Moor, including six 0-0 draws.

While Burnley’s remarkable tally of nine goals conceded in their first 29 games is well on target to break the best defensive record in a second-tier season of 30, this was not a game to make fans hoping for entertainment yearn for either club to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

Trafford’s save took the 22-year-old’s run without conceding in the league to almost 11 hours and may have most pleased the two other teams chasing automatic promotion to the top flight.

Second-placed Sheffield United are two points behind Leeds, while fourth-placed Sunderland are two shy of Burnley. The next fixture involving two of the four contenders comes when the Black Cats host the Whites on February 17 (8pm GMT).
