Dark Winds season 3 is on the way, and viewers are already wondering what the future holds for AMC’s psychological neo-noir Western. Dark Winds adapts Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels which focus on the Navajo County tribal police. Making its debut on AMC in 2022, the first two chapters have already drawn a dedicated following. The finale of season 2 saw veteran officer Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) exact justice on B.J. Vines (John Diehl), the man responsible for his son’s death — an explosive ending that left the door wide open for Dark Winds season 3.

When the release date arrives, Dark Winds season 3 will be picking up where the hugely successful second left off. The second season of Dark Winds saw a 146% viewership spike over the first (via Variety), and both AMC and the cast, crew, and creative team of Dark Winds plan to continue. Dark Winds season 3 is confirmed to be on the way, and while there aren’t many concrete details about the story yet, there are already a few hints at what’s next for Leaphorn, Chee, Bernadette, and the rest of the Navajo reservation.

As the series’ March 2025 return looms, the latest news arrives in the form of a second trailer for Dark Winds season 2. The brief but creepy trailer follows Leaphorn as he recounts his childhood belief in monsters. Many of the images shown onscreen are violent and surreal, and seem to point to a more horrific third season as the evil that men do begins to take on a ghoulish aspect. The last image of the teaser shows what looks like a clawed creature lurking behind a sheet, suggesting that Leaphorn’s vivid imagination may manifest in some terrifying ways.

Executive producer Chris Eyre, who also directed the season 2 finale, believes there are plenty of stories left to tell.

Dark Winds was renewed for season 3, several weeks after the second season finale. This was welcome news, especially since many involved in the show made it clear that the story wasn’t over. Executive producer Chris Eyre, who also directed the season 2 finale, believes there are plenty of stories left to tell. “I don’t feel like we’ve hit our stride with this series,” Eyre told TVLine earlier that same month. He went on to note that Hillerman’s source material is composed of a staggering 18 volumes, meaning there’s plenty to draw from where Leaphorn and Chee are concerned.

Though news was somewhat slow during the show’s offseason, it was eventually revealed that the dark neo-Western will return on March 9, 2025. The third outing will be composed of 8 episodes which will air weekly on AMC. This is two more than the previous seasons, which only featured 6 episodes each. No reason for the show’s expansion has been given, but this implies that season 3’s story will be supersized.

Dark Winds season 2 concluded on September 3, 2023.

Even if the act brought Leaphorn much-needed catharsis concerning his son’s death, it’s clear that the past is never really laid to rest in this psychological thriller.

AMC has revealed the plot for the upcoming third season of Dark Winds and it offers a tantalizing mystery. Set six months after season 2’s finale, the new season will follow Leaphorn and Chee as they investigate the disappearance of two young boys with almost no evidence to help them. Meanwhile, Bernadette attempts to find a place for herself at the Border Patrol Agency but discovers a conspiracy involving trafficking.

These developments will be important in Dark Winds season 3, but they’re far from the only expected plot threads. Although the Dark Winds season 2 finale, “Hózhó náhásdlįį,” sees Leaphorn confronting a crucial moral dilemma head-on, this doesn’t tie up all the series’ loose threads. Dark Winds season 2’s ending saw Leaphorn killing Vines — albeit indirectly — which will likely complicate his character going forward. Even if the act brought Leaphorn much-needed catharsis concerning his son’s death, it’s clear that the past is never really laid to rest in this psychological thriller.

A still from the Dark Winds season 2 teaser with Lt. Joe Leaphorn laying on the ground

In anticipation of the show’s March 2025 release date, AMC dropped a short teaser for Dark Winds season 3 in November 2024. The teaser, which mainly serves to reveal the release date, is narrated by Leaphorn as various scenes of violence play out against the show’s noir-like Western backdrop. The narration sees Leaphorn grappling with his own morals as he must go to unethical lengths to protect what he sees as justice.

Following the first teaser, AMC dropped a second trailer in January 2025 that puts an emphasis on the creepy nature of the third season of Dark Winds. Set to narration by Leaphorn, who recounts his childhood belief in monsters from folklore, the teaser shows gruesome images that border on the surreal as the office seemingly descends into madness. The last clip includes the shadow of some sort of clawed monster looming behind a sheet, hinting that Leaphorn’s imagination may manifest.
