Before Christopher Nolan became an acclaimed filmmaker who gave us mind-bending stories like Interstellar, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Tenet, and more recently Oscar-winning Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy, his first commercial film was Memento, which presents another non-linear thrilling crime tale. The movie is well known among his fans and now for a wider audience, the film has landed a new streaming home on Prime Video.
The movie follows an insurance investigator, Leonard Shelby, who suffers from anterograde amnesia —resulting in short-term memory loss— and uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. The movie stands as a testament to Nolans’ storytelling prowess as its non-linear narrative is presented as two different sequences of scenes –black and white and colored— interspersed during the film.
The movie has a 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. Over the years, the film has developed a cult following and is widely appreciated for its structure and themes of memory, perception, and grief. The movie cast Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, Carrie-Anne Moss as Natalie, Joe Pantoliano as John Edward “Teddy” Gammell, Mark Boone Junior as Burt, Jorja Fox as Catherine Shelby, Stephen Tobolowsky as Samuel R. “Sammy” Jankis. Further rounding off the cast are Harriet Sansom Harris as Mrs. Jankis, Thomas Lennon as Doctor, Callum Keith Rennie as Dodd, Kimberly Campbell as Blonde, Marianne Muellerleile as Tattooist and Larry Holden as James F. “Jimmy” Grantz among others.
