Charlie Cox’s DCU Dream Role Is The Opposite Of The MCU’s Daredevil & That’s Why I Think It’s Perfect

Charlie Cox has revealed which DC Universe role he’d want to take on after playing Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again, and I would love to see him portray this iconic role following his solo MCU series. Charlie Cox first appeared as Matt Murdock’s Daredevil in Marvel Television’s original Daredevil series, a part of the Defenders Saga on Netflix. His vigilante lawyer has now become a prominent part of the MCU’s main continuity, but I hope this wouldn’t stop Cox from making the move to the DCU.

The first trailers for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Daredevil: Born Again revival series make me hopeful that Charlie Cox’s career in the MCU proper is just beginning. While this could mean a role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly-rebooted DC Universe would be unlikely for the English actor, Cox’s dream DC role actually makes me think he could easily play this DC character and Daredevil simultaneously. They couldn’t be more opposite to each other, which makes me think Charlie Cox would be perfect as DC’s most legendary villain.

Charlie Cox’s DCU Dream Role Is DC’s Biggest Villain

Charlie Cox’s DCU Dream Would Be Perfect

Heath Ledger's Joker pulling a string in The Dark Knight

While speaking at the Daredevil: Born Again panel at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024, Charlie Cox revealed that he would most enjoy playing the Joker in the new DC Universe. The Joker, typically an adversary to Batman, is perhaps DC’s most iconic supervillain, which has spurred a number of fantastic live-action adaptations by the likes of Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, and some not-so-great interpretations (sorry, Jared Leto). It’s inevitable the Joker will be recreated for the new DCU, and I’d love to see Charlie Cox in the role.

I wouldn’t want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they’re so brilliant, but I was thinking like, the Joker would be a lot of fun… If you could find a way to do something… You know, I mean, Heath Ledger for me nailed that part obviously… If you could find a new take on it in some way, that would be cool.

The Joker first appeared in DC Comics back in 1940’s Batman #1, and has been a significant adversary to the Caped Crusader and a number of other DC heroes in the decades since. While Barry Keoghan may return as the Joker in The Batman – Part II, I think it’s likely that a new version of the Clown Prince of Crime will debut in the DCU’s The Brave and the Bold movie. I think Charlie Cox’s time as Daredevil in the MCU makes him the perfect choice for the DCU’s Joker.

Charlie Cox Being A Major MCU Hero & Major DCU Villain Could Be Perfect

Daredevil & The Joker Are Wildly Different

So far, no actors have been confirmed for simultaneous roles in the MCU and in the new DC Universe, but I don’t see why this couldn’t be possible in the future. James Gunn has already promised a role for Chris Pratt in the DCU while he also continues to play Peter Quill’s Legendary Star-Lord in the MCU, so Charlie Cox could follow in his footsteps. I think the huge differences between Daredevil and the Joker makes this villainous role perfect for Cox, as these characters will both be crucial to their respective franchises, but couldn’t be more different.

Daredevil, as the Man Without Fear, operates as the staunch protector of Hell’s Kitchen, and Charlie Cox’s iteration has usually been depicted taking on the influential and terrifying Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, and the mysterious Hand. Conversely, the Joker is the more enigmatic and sinister villain roaming the streets of Gotham City, which would completely flip Charlie Cox’s MCU role on its head. I would love to see Charlie Cox show off his talent and range by portraying both Daredevil and the Joker.

Joker & Daredevil Do Have Some Similarities

While their motivations and methods might be wildly different, Daredevil and the Joker do also share some similarities that make me think Charlie Cox is the perfect casting choice for the iconic DC villain. Cox has displayed the wit and humor of Matt Murdock brilliantly throughout his decade-long career as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, and these are qualities that the Joker also has in spades. However, Cox has also become an expert at balancing these lighthearted traits with a sense of mystery and darkness in Daredevil, which is perfect for the Joker.

Charlie Cox looks back on Daredevil’s cancelation and his return as Matt Murdock in the MCU, acknowledging the possibility of hanging up the cowl.

The first trailer for Daredevil: Born Again suggests the upcoming MCU series will be the darkest chapter yet in Matt Murdock’s storyline. This could prime Charlie Cox to make the move to the DC Universe, as it’s heavily implied that Daredevil will break his “no kill” rule, crossing a line that forces him to retire as the Man Without Fear. I would love to see Charlie Cox become the first actor to play roles in both the MCU and the DCU, and seeing him jump from hero to villain would be incredible.
