Cast, Story & Everything We Know

The Netflix original series Beef has been a steady hit for the streamer, and a second season has been ordered with a brand-new cast. The witty comedy-drama series follows lead characters Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Ali Wong) as a road rage incident spirals out of control and takes over their lives. Joining the ranks of many of Netflix’s other big-budget shows, Beef features a fresh concept that has the potential to deliver laughs in abundance while also accentuating its dramatic aspects.

Beef tackles the over-the-top drama of modern life, and it finds its humor through the escalation of pettiness to the absolute extreme. As with most bleak comedies, the basis of the plot merely serves as a jumping-off point for the biting critique of society, and the jokes are multilayered and fresh. Being a co-production with A24, the cinematic aspects of Beef weren’t neglected either, giving the show a high-quality feel that’s greatly helped drive demand for Beef season 2. Netflix has confirmed another season, but this time it will tell a new story.

Netflix’s successful partnership with A24 on Beef has emboldened the streamer to continue the series as an anthology. Though it took quite a while for the streamer to officially green-light the sophomore outing, Netflix made the official announcement in October 2024. A brand-new cast and story are promised for the second outing, but Lee Sung Jin is returning as creator, showrunner and executive producer. This comes more than a year after the conclusion of season 1, but a full timeline remains elusive.

Beef season 1 premiered on April 6, 2023.

A Brand-New Cast Has Been Announced

The brilliant cast and characters of Beef were the glue that held season 1 together, and the co-leads Ali Wong and Steven Yeun have been handsomely rewarded during the 2024 award season. However, new developments for Beef season 2 reveal that Wong and Yeun will not be reprising their roles as Danny and Amy. Now, Oscar Isaac of Moon Knight fame will lead the series alongside three-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).

Along with those two, Charles Melton (May December) and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus) have been cast as co-leads. A major supporting star has also been announced, and Parasite actor Song Kang-Ho has been tapped to appear in a guest capacity. Other names added to the ensemble include Seoyeon Jang (Butterfly), William Fichtner (Prison Break), Mikaela Hoover (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and musician BM, who is making his acting debut in the series. No details are known about their characters yet.

Steven Yeun and Ali Wong both won an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critic’s Choice Award for their performances in Beef season 1.

Beef Season 2 Story Details

A New Beef Is Heating Up

Amy holds a gun between her thighs in Beef

Though it had been teased in earlier developments, it’s been confirmed that Beef season 2 is taking the anthology approach and will chronicle entirely different characters who are locked in their own bitter and petty feuds. Shifting from the story in season 1, the sophomore outing will follow a young couple who witnesses a brutal fight between their boss and his wife. This young couple will presumably be played by Melton and Spaeny, while the boss and his wife should be portrayed by Isaac and Mulligan.

Taking things to a new and petty level, the season will see the young couple use their knowledge of the fight to blackmail their way into the halls of power. In this case, the proverbial halls will be a swanky country club, and they use their social capital to get to the club’s wealthy owner. Like season 1, Beef season 2 will probably continue to build on that idea and take things to ridiculous heights as each character gets more and more desperate to win the fight.
