HBO’s hit teen drama starring Zendaya wrapped up season 2 in February 2022, and over a year later, Euphoria season 3 news is trickling in. After first premiering in 2019, Euphoria season 2 was a long time coming with over two years between the first and second seasons (save for two special episodes focused on Zendaya’s character Rue and Hunter Schafer’s character Jules). Euphoria season 2 proved to be controversial even as its popularity skyrocketed, promoting fervent discussions of the show on social media about both behind-the-scenes drama and some of the creative decisions made throughout its run.

Euphoria season 2 picks up sometime after the events of the season 1 finale, with Rue having relapsed and still estranged from her (now ex-) girlfriend Jules after she left her at the train station. Jules is unaware that Rue has relapsed even though it’s instantly clear that things aren’t right. Where Euphoria goes from here remains unclear as the season 2 ending doesn’t paint the clearest picture of what the show’s future could look like. Despite these flaws, the confidence with which the show operates indicates that Euphoria season 3 could top its predecessor.

With the next season finally beginning to take shape, the latest news sees HBO chief Casey Bloys dispel Euphoria cancelation rumors. Not long after rumors began circulating online that the series was canned, Bloys spoke up and emphatically assured viewers that the series was indeed continuing. Nothing’s changed,” said Bloys, “Somebody said something online, and then this whole thing started.” He then went on to confirm that shooting begins in January 2025 and even revealed that season 3 will consist of eight total episodes.

Read Bloys’ full comments here:

We are shooting ‘Euphoria.’ I think we have a start date, mid to late January. Nothing’s changed. Somebody said something online, and then this whole thing started.
We are shooting the season. I have read the scripts. We’re happy.
We’re moving ahead. All of the actors. I know the show gets a lot of attention now because, you know, it has created some genuine movie stars, and they have various projects that are working on, but we are shooting this season, so nothing has changed. It’s eight episodes.

More Drama Is On The Way

After the massive increase in viewership that season 2 experienced, Euphoria season 3 has officially been renewed at HBO. There’s no word yet on how many episodes the season will feature, although it can be assumed that it will run for eight, just like the first two. Euphoria season 3 news revealed the pickup just a few weeks into its second season run, making it clear that HBO is banking on the show as one of its biggest hits.

Euphoria
season 2 concluded on February 27, 2022.

Don’t Expect New Episodes Until At Least 2025

the longer it takes for
Euphoria
season 3 to materialize, the less and less the audience is likely to stick around.

Even though Euphoria season 3 news confirms the season has been greenlit by HBO, that doesn’t mean it’ll be released any time soon. Amid delays due to scheduling, and losing most of 2023 due to the Hollywood strikes, it has now been revealed that Euphoria season 3 won’t return until 2025. HBO has yet to provide a more specific release window at this time.

The first positive piece of news regarding season 3 came in July 2024 with the announcement that the new episodes begin filming in January 2025. HBO chief Casey Bloys emphatically confirmed the January 2025 shooting date in a statement from November 2024, and he revealed that season 3 will have eight episodes. Unfortunately, the longer it takes for Euphoria season 3 to materialize, the less and less the audience is likely to stick around.

The WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes ran from May to November 2023 and resulted in many TV and movie productions being delayed or put on hold.

Euphoria Season 3 Cast

Who Will & Who Won’t Return For Season 3?

While there has been no official Euphoria season 3 casting announcements, two returns have already seemingly been confirmed. Dominic Fike recently revealed that he will “absolutely” return in season 3 as Elliot (via NME). HBO executive Casey Bloys also confirmed that Zendaya will return as Rue in Euphoria season 3 after doubts the megastar wouldn’t return to focus on other projects. Unfortunately, following Angus Cloud’s passing, Fez likely won’t feature in Euphoria season 3. Though recasting is possible, Cloud’s unique and memorable performance would make that a huge risk.

While the main cast is expected to return en masse, the only question mark was Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez. After several notable clashes with showrunner Sam Levinson Ferreira finally announced she was leaving Euphoria because she didn’t like where her character was headed. The actress revealed why she left, saying (via Cinema Blend):

“I think my character, who I love so dearly, I don’t think there was a place for her to go. … I think there were places she could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show. I just don’t know if it was going to do her justice.”

What Happens Next In Season 3?

A closeup of Fez with a bloody cheek as he looks on with tears in his eyes in Euphoria

Despite a controversial run and a somewhat confounding finale, Euphoria season 2’s ending sets up numerous possibilities for the Euphoria season 3 story. While it’s unclear where some characters are headed – Rue seems to be on a path of redemption, but there is also a hint that she might relapse – there are relationships that need following up on. Season 3 will also see a time jump that takes the characters out of the high school setting, though it’s unclear where they will end up next.

From Fez’s downfall and his response to the death of Ashtray to Cassie and Maddy’s relationship (and the former’s romance with Nate), there’s plenty to mine for Euphoria season 3. However, Angus Cloud’s passing will likely necessitate some story changes to account for his absence. After other characters like Kat, Jules, and Elliot were sidelined, though, it’s unclear what’s in store for them in the upcoming season.
