Cancelation & Everything We Know

Apple TV+ renewed the cheeky comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin for a second season, but it has since been scrapped. Starring Noel Fielding as the titular bandit, Dick Turpin fictionalizes and lampoons the exploits of the real-life highwayman from British lore who, along with his Essex Gang, set out to become the greatest highwayman in English history. Like many projects involving Fielding, Dick Turpin utilizes surrealist comedy to pick apart the romanticized figure from history, but does so without losing any of the accessible charm that any comedy show should have.

Most of the reviews for the show’s first season were overwhelmingly positive, and it offered a side of the beloved Great British Bake Off host that hasn’t been seen since his early 2000s comedy classic, The Mighty Boosh. Similarly, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin filled the void left by the tragic cancelation of HBO’s Our Flag Means Death, which also used hilarious anachronism to explore historical lore. Dick Turpin‘s season 2 renewal was something of a surprise nevertheless, but it was even more surprising when the show was canceled despite being nearly completely filmed.

Apple TV+ gave the show a quick renewal in mid-2024, but the latest news confirms that The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin season 2 is canceled. Networks and streamers rarely change their minds after giving a show a season order, but Dick Turpin‘s case is somewhat unique. In a strange twist of fate, the once confirmed season 2 of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin has now been canceled. Apple TV+ didn’t simply change their mind about the well-received historical comedy, but was instead forced to make the difficult decision due to the abrupt departure of star Noel Fielding. The British comedy legend reportedly failed to return to the set after the 2024 holiday break, and the series is now scrapped despite being nearly two-thirds finished.

Unfortunately, there is likely no saving Dick Turpin because of Fielding’s departure. Unlike other cancelations which can be saved by other streamers, it’s clear that the show is nothing without its star who has yet to give a reason for his exit from the project. As such, viewers will probably never get more Completely Made-Up Adventures.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin season 1 concluded on March 29, 2024.

Noel Fielding Returned As The Anti-Hero Dick Turpin

As the name suggests, the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin was the center of Apple TV+’s silly comedy, and he was set to return in season 2. Noel Fielding returned to reprise his role as the celebrated bandit, but departed the project which casued its cancelation. Joining Fielding’s Turpin was likely the rest of his notorious Essex Gang, including the newly-confident Moose Pleck played by Marc Wootton, and the skeptical “Nell” Turner played by Ellie White.

Another important character who probably returned for the cast of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin season 2 was Dolly Wells as Elize Bean, the journalist who chronicles Turpin’s exploits but is also somewhat swayed by his charms. Similarly, Hugh Bonneville’s Jonathan Wilde should also have returned to play foil for Dick Turpin and his Essex Gang.

The first season of The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin ended on a high note with Dick earning the approval of his dad and vanquishing Tommy Silversides, who had taken over the Essex Gang. This left the door wide open for season 2, and it had likely contrived some new conflict for the silly bandit to fight against. Considering the ahistorical nature of the series, and its surreal comedy, it’s impossible to predict exactly what could have happened to the Essex Gang in season 2, but the show’s cancelation now means viewers will never get to find out.
