Romance anime can be a genre that is difficult for outsiders to appreicate. Outlandish plot lines, ridiculous set pieces, and some of anime’s most notorious tropes can make the genre unapproachable for those fans who aren’t already obsessed with it. Luckily, there are series like Pseudo Harem out there to breethe new life into the genre. Pseudo Harem stands out even among the best romance anime through its simple and unique premise.
Eiji Kitahama is a second-year student in high school who has always wanted more attention than he got and finally achieves his goal when he meets first-year Rin Nanakura. Rin is an exceptional actress and gives Eiji a harem by acting as different girls. It’s a fun, light-hearted premise that only gets better as the series progresses. With Rin acting as other girls, Eiji can still get the harem he’s always wanted without having to actually ‘date’ multiple girls at once. It’s a wonderful series that turns an overused trope on its head wonderfully and quickly.
Set In a Believable World
Nothing Is Too Out of the Ordinary
One of the most important parts of any romance anime is the world that the characters find themselves in. Without a believable world, it’s hard to empathize with the characters in the series. The story of Pseudo Harem takes place in a normal high school environment, with relatable characters, understandable motivations, and more. Each character comes with their own unique personality that makes sense given the background and goals that they have.

New Romance Isekai Manhwa Has A Premise That Completely Flips The Genre On Its Head
With Webtoon’s creations thriving and new manhwa added practically daily, one romance isekai series is garnering attention among pet lovers.
The two main characters, Eiji and Rin, are also two of the most grounded romance anime heroes. Eiji seems like any kid in any high school. He’s a simple guy who just wants a little more attention, and when he gets it from the adorable Rin, he couldn’t be happier. While he wants a harem like most romance anime protagonists, he’s a lot more wholesome in his desire. He finds the perfect girl in Rin, an actress who wants to practice her acting skills whenever she gets the chance.
When the two meet each other, they’re almost perfect right away. Eiji is one of romance anime’s coolest and most confident characters when he introduces Rin to the drama club. She’s a cute, passionate actress who adds a ton of value to her surroundings as well. Both Eiji and Rin add to their respective worlds through their realistic goals and much more.
Fun Side Characters
Rin and Eiji’s Friends Add a Lot to the Series
While the series is centered on Eiji, Rin, and their budding romance, Pseudo Harem also has one of anime’s best supporting casts. Characters like Ayaka Nanakura, Rin’s younger sister, Megu, Rin’s best friend, and Motokuni, another member of the drama club, are all fun every time they’re on-screen.
Megu and Rin’s interactions are hilarious. Megu is a calmer, less casual version of Rin who just wants to have fun and doesn’t care too much about much. She’s the perfect opposite to Rin, who might be a little more high-strung than she needs to be. Ayaka is an adorable sister to Rin as well, having a lot more fun than her often stressed-out older sister.

The best romance manhwas on Webtoon spark many feelings and occasional tears in the readers and are perfect when looking for the next binge-read.
Altogether, the side characters in Pseudo Harem make the main characters’ story even more fulfilling. They’re great characters who support their friend/sister Rin while she pursues love, and they’re always there for Eiji when he needs them most too. For a good romance anime to be successful, it needs more than just its main characters, and that’s an area Pseudo Harem does well.
Great Main Characters
Eiji and Rin Are Exceptional
Eiji and Rin are two of the best main characters in any romance anime, and anime in general. They’re both entirely believable, have a lot of love and respect for one another, and share a lot of the same values. Eiji loves Rin’s passion for drama and is always encouraging her and her multiple personalities to do their best. Rin admires Eiji for his cool demeanor and his passion for drama as well. Together, they get the most out of each other.
Their dynamic is what makes Pseudo Harem so great. They’re always trying to get to know each other more and on a deeper level, exploring each other’s characters wonderfully. They’re also both willing to go deep into a joke, acting like their getting married at one point in the series only to laugh it off later. Eiji is even willing to get rejected by some of Rin’s personalities before being doted on by others in what would normally be confusing for any other character. Rin and Eiji’s relationship is at the forefront of the series and Pseudo Harem is made all the better for it.
Makes a Bad Trope Excellent
The First Harem That Almost Makes Sense
Anyone who has some semblance of knowledge about anime has heard about the controversial harem trope. It’s a trope in which the main character has multiple beautiful, interesting potential partners pursuing them at once. It’s not the most unimaginable thing for a high-school-aged guy to want several women interested in him, but if he really does find a harem, it’s pretty unrealistic. Many characters who get harems in anime aren’t interesting themselves, further begging the question as to how they got the harem in the first place.

Netflix’s Best Romance Anime Releases New OVA To Get Fans Ready For Season 2
My Happy Marriage releases an all-new OVA in preparation for the upcoming season 2 on Netflix.
Pseudo Harem turns the trope on its head by giving Eiji the harem he’s always wanted through Rin’s acting abilities. Rin’s ability to bring her multiple personalities and emotions to light makes it seem like Eiji is dating several different girls at once. It’s an amazing way to use the trope without actually using the trope. Eiji still gets his harem, and Rin still gets to date a loyal man at the same time. Not only does Rin get to date a man only interested in her, but she gets to practice her acting skills as well.
Pseudo Harem is one of the best romance anime series around for several great reasons. It has a relatable world filled with interesting side characters, two of the most lovable main characters in romance, and one of the best ways to reuse the harem trope in anime.
