Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a long-running, yet tragically underrated magical girl anime franchise. The Nanoha franchise recently finished airing a TV-edited version of the two recap films from the 2010s, and following that, it was revealed that Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha will receive a new anime in 2025 titled Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance. This will be the first new Nanoha project in almost a decade, and even with what little is known about it, there’s plenty of reason to be excited for old and new fans alike.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance’s Story Explained
While there isn’t a lot of information about the new Nanoha anime, there’s still plenty that can be gathered about the plot. Nanoha is stated to be 13 in the plot description, and with the anime’s official timeline, not only is Nanoha now an official agent of the Time-Space Administration Bureau, but it means that Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance takes place in the ten years between Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers. That period has been notably vague for years, so it’s great that the new anime is expanding on it.
The timeline of Guns Blaze Vengeance is also notable for its relationship to a key moment in Nanoha’s history. When Nanoha was 11, she was nearly killed by drones secretly operated by Jail Scaglietti, the main villain of Strikers, so with the new anime taking place so close to that incident, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance will likely explore the trauma of Nanoha’s near-death experience to a further degree than Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers. All of that is hypothetical, but with how much life that would add to the anime, it would be great to see.
Should Nanoha Fans Watch The Anime Or The Movies Before Watching The New Nanoha Anime?
With Nanoha finally getting a new anime, that begs the question of what fans need to watch to prepare for it. While the first two movies are largely just recap films of the anime, not only do they have notable differences in their plots and characterizations, but the most recent films, Reflection and Detonation, are explicitly in the continuity of the films, not the anime. Because of that, it’s unclear if people should watch the Nanoha anime or the films before watching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance, especially with how little of its plot is currently known.
Another issue regarding watch order is the in-universe way the films relate to the anime. The first two films exist as in-universe films created to inform the public of Nanoha and Fate’s adventures, and while the same wasn’t said about Reflection and Detonation, it can be assumed that they’re in-universe retellings of Nanoha and Fate’s adventures, as well. The entire canonicity of the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha films is complicated when trying to relate them to the anime, but hopefully, things will be cleared up by the time Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance premieres in 2025.
Why A New Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Anime Is So Exciting
Continuity issues aside, there’s plenty of reason to be excited about Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha finally getting a new anime. For starters, the new series will likely be another one to heavily focus on Nanoha and Fate’s relationship, and if so, then Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance is a perfect chance to drop the ambiguity of Nanoha and Fate’s relationship and make them an official couple. The series is meant to celebrate the anime’s 20th anniversary, and there would be no better means of celebration than by finally paying service to one of its most iconic elements.
More than that, however, is what people can expect from the anime’s direction. Nanoha is a phenomenal magical girl anime thanks to its great action and writing, and with how much the quality of the series improves with every installment, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS: Gun Blaze Vengeance will be great to watch because it’s bound to be the best Nanoha series to date in terms of visuals and writing. Gun Blaze Vengeance is the most exciting Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha project in almost a decade, and it’s sure to be a welcome addition to the franchise come 2025.
