Apple TV+’s acclaimed television series Severance has now returned for its second season, and its reveal of the innies returning to Lumon has raised more questions than ever. The series follows a group of people who have undergone the severance procedure to separate their inner and outer lives, creating a divide between what their two selves know and experience. This division serves to highlight the sinister nature of their company, Lumon, and the fact that both the innies and outies do not know what their jobs are.
Severance‘s talented cast is led by Adam Scott as Mark Scout, whose innie and outie both become suspicious of Lumon and work to figure out exactly what is going on inside. As he teams up with the other members of his department, Macrodata Refinement, they attempt to learn more about their outer lives and the secrets that Lumon is keeping from them, leading to Severance season 1’s shocking ending. However, in the opening episode of season 2, all the MDR employees choose to stay at Lumon despite their previous attempts to leave, creating questions as to why Mark would have chosen this fate.

The major reason that he chose to get severed in the first place was because of the death of his wife Gemma, so when Mr. Milchick tells Mark’s outie that his innie found love at work, he feels like at least half of him should get to be happy. As soon as Milchick reveals the information about Mark’s feelings for Helly, outie Mark’s whole demeanor changes. The revelation about innie Mark’s feelings reminds him of what he lost when Gemma died and the emotional struggle that he has dealt with since then.

Although outie Mark is skeptical about his innie’s outburst about Gemma in Severance‘s season 1 finale, when combined with his prior suspicions about Lumon, he cannot ignore the possibility that she could still be alive. On top of this, his innie already knows that she is alive and has been unknowingly acting as their wellness counselor, Ms. Casey. Even though their minds are separated, they are both slowly working toward the same goal, and they can only do that if Mark continues working at Lumon.
