Over the last year, Weekly Shōnen Jump has lost some of its best-selling and most iconic works of the last decade. With the ending of My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, the future seemed dark for the magazine; luckily, it has been gaining steam lately thanks to promising new works like Ichi the Witch. However, the publisher had decided to end another of its most recognized titles despite the concern of the fans.
Just one week after the conclusion of The Yozakura Family’s manga after a 6-year serialization and with a second season of its anime adaptation currently in production, Shōnen Jump has revealed fans will have to say goodbye this week to another of the magazine’s most notable works, Undead Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka.
Undead Unluck Announces Its Ending Soon, Leaving Fans Worried About Shōnen Jump’s Future
Undead Unluck’s Sudden Final Arc Sparked Cancelation Rumors
Undead Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka, one of the current long-running mangas of the Weekly Shōnen Jump since January 2020, has announced the official release date of its final chapter. Undead Unluck will conclude its story this Sunday, January 26, 2025, in chapter #239, after a final arc that started in September 2024 that leaves fans in shock with a sudden time skip. Fans claimed on social media that the series shouldn’t be canceled, yet it advanced through its final arc, and it looks like the series will have the happy ending it deserves.
Despite Undead Unluck achieving popularity after its anime adaptation by David Production and currently having a special hour-long episode, scheduled to premiere sometime in 2025, this recognition didn’t reflect in the manga sales or in the ranking of the magazine. This led fans of the series to believe that the magazine’s publisher forced Tozuka to conclude the series earlier than expected.
Weekly Shōnen Jump Is Betting on New Series
The Magazine Is Still Searching for Its Next Big Hit
The recent back-to-back endings of some of WSJ’s older works, The Yozakura Family and now Undead Unluck, could have been to give space in the magazine to new series. Currently, the longest mangas in the magazine are One Piece, Sakamoto Days, and Me & Robocco, with the rest having been released after 2020. However, with the success in sales of Ichi the Witch and other series that are steadily gaining recognition, like Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi and Astro Royale, the imprint appears not to be afraid of testing if the next sensation will arise from one of them.
