Paramount+’s lucrative partnership with Taylor Sheridan has produced another hit in the form of 2024’s Landman, but will the drama series return for season 2? Created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, the series concerns the oil business of West Texas, and the myriad of characters that come along with such an explosive industry. Much like Sheridan’s Yellowstone, Landman exists at the crux of a handful of hot-button topics, including environmental issues, business ethics, and the overall politics of a nation dependent on fossil fuels. Behind all that, though, are compelling dramas about the people that drive the industry.
Though it’s separate from the aforementioned Yellowstone franchise, Landman is very much like it’s neo-Western predecessor in many ways. Perhaps most importantly, Landman serves up a bevy of complicated and multidimensional characters that mirror the complicated issues tackled on a grander scale by the series. All this adds up to another potential smash-hit for Paramount+, proving that Sheridan is still the biggest name in modern TV. However, Landman has yet to secure a season 2 renewal, and that will be the first step on its long road to becoming another TV institution.

Billy Bob Thornton Weighs In On Season 2’s Chances
Following the show’s shocking season 1 conclusion, the latest news concerns the possibility of Landman season 2 as addressed by Billy Bob Thorton. Peeling back the curtain inside the Taylor Sheridan camp, Thornton shined a light on how the TV maven crafts his shows and comes up with subsequent seasons. Thornton mentioned that Sheridan “keeps it pretty close to the vest until it’s time”, suggesting Landman season 2 might be a ways off. Though earlier reports suggested work was already happening, Thornton’s comments have changed the tune.
Read what Billy Bob Thornton had to say here:
[Series creator] Taylor [Sheridan] keeps it pretty close to the vest until it’s time. Okay. And when he knows it’s time, he’ll let me know. And when he lets me know, he really lets me know the whole thing. It’s kind of like you want to get all the dust out of the corners before the family gets home when you’re cleaning the house. He really wants it to be where it’s supposed to be before any of us hear about it.
Landman season 1 ended on January 12, 2025.
Landman Season 2 Is Not Confirmed
The Taylor Sheridan Show Hasn’t Been Renewed Yet
Except for a few miniseries, every Taylor Sheridan series has returned for at least a sophomore season, and Landman has all the makings of the producer/writer/director/actor’s next big hit.
Even though Taylor Sheridan has the magic touch in recent years, Landman hasn’t scored a season 2 renewal yet. This shouldn’t be too surprising considering how new the series is, and there’s no reason to think that Paramount+ won’t want more episodes in the future. Except for a few miniseries, every Taylor Sheridan series has returned for at least a sophomore season, and Landman has all the makings of the producer/writer/director/actor’s next big hit. With Yellowstone fading away, Landman can fill that void.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves and 1883 are the only Taylor Sheridan series that haven’t been renewed for a second season.
Everything will depend on how the viewership numbers hold up across the show’s entire run, and one-time ratings won’t be enough to guarantee more episodes. If fans stick around for the whole of season 1’s run, there’s a big chance that Paramount+ will order another season. Tulsa King, 1923, and Lioness have all scored sophomore seasons, and Landman could join them.
Landman Is Not A Yellowstone Spinoff
An Entirely New Drama That Is Separate From The Neo-Western
With Yellowstone riding off into the sunset, even as its franchise expands, it’s important to note that Landman is not a part of the Yellowstone universe. While it tackles many of the same themes as Yellowstone, Landman isn’t connected, nor is it meant to be a replacement. The Dutton family has nothing to do with Landman‘s story, and it’s even drawn from a podcast series that is based on real events. This means that Landman has a chance to step out of Yellowstone‘s shadow and establish itself as a standalone hit.

Will Billy Bob Thornton & The Cast Return?
Predicting the cast of Landman season 2 isn’t particularly difficult, since the oil drama will need to bring back its ensemble in order to tell a compelling ongoing story. While deaths are always a possibility in the world of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, it’s highly likely that the main cast will be back on hand to reprise their roles. This means Billy Bob Thornton should once again play oil company crisis executive, Tommy Norris. Shockingly, Jon Hamm’s oil executive Monty Miller died in the season 1 finale, meaning Tommy’s foil won’t be back.
Meanwhile, big stars like Ali Larter (who plays Tommy’s wife Angela) will also be back, as will Demi Moore as Tommy’s close personal friend, Cami, who is also Monty’s widow. Moore’s small role in season 1 was somewhat criticized for underutilizing the recent Golden Globe winner, but she could have a bigger role soon. The supporting cast is somewhat less certain, but one thing that makes Sheridan’s shows so compelling is the plethora of storylines that weave around the main conflict.

Landman Season 2 Story Details
Things Will Only Get More Tense
Not to be outdone by other Taylor Sheridan show, the ending of Landman season 1 was a twist-filled romp that changed the entire complexion of the series going forward. Kicking off with the death of Monty, the final episode of season 1 saw his widow Cami take over. She opts to ignore Tommy’s advice to liquidate the company and live well for the rest of her life, and instead decides to double down on the risky oil drilling plan. Meanwhile, Tommy is captured and tortured by the cartel before learning that Galino hopes to get involved with the oil industry.
All this sets up a big clash as Cami’s plans could go belly-up, while a dangerous element like Galino and his gang begin to worm their way into the so-called legitimate business. Caught in the middle is Tommy, who is an intermediary between the two worlds, though he isn’t happy about his unflattering position. Elsewhere, Cooper and Ariana’s relationship took a big step, and the pair only grew closer when he accepted her grief. It remains to be seen if Tommy’s prediction about their relationship will come true in Landman season 2.
