Mufasa: The Lion King expands on the story of the titular Lion King, but it also totally changes a Scar and Sarabi moment from 2019’s The Lion King remake. The backstories of Mufasa and Scar before the events of The Lion King have always been mysterious, with vague lines being our only hints as to what came before the time of Simba. However, now that Mufasa: The Lion King has finally expanded on the histories of these characters, one The Lion King line is now far more heartbreaking.
Although it has always been known that Scar is jealous of Mufasa in The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King finally reveals why. As it turns out, Mufasa is the adoptive brother of Scar, who was once known as Taka. The duo became inseparable brothers who went on a journey together after their family was killed, with them meeting Sarabi, Rafiki, and several other The Lion King characters along the way. However, Sarabi is at the center of Mufasa and Taka’s falling out, with her leading to the creation of Scar.

Foreshadowing This Mufasa Reveal
Scar and Mufasa’s wife Sarabi interact very little in both versions of The Lion King, with them only really talking after Scar overthrows the Pride Lands near the end of the film. What dialogue there is doesn’t reveal much, with them only exchanging a few lines. However, at one point Scar says the line “Long ago, you chose Mufasa over me,” a line that has been given so much more meaning after the release of Mufasa: The Lion King.

Mufasa: The Lion King reveals that Scar actually loved Sarabi, with Mufasa even helping Scar in his attempts to court her. After having seen the prequel, it is now known that Scar doesn’t just want power. Instead, he is also trying to win Sarabi back, with the villain reclaiming the love of his life alongside his throne.

While Scar is still in the wrong in The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King at least tries to make him a more sympathetic antagonist. The line that Scar says to Sarabi in the 2019 film is a reminder of his heartbreak, further cementing the tragedy that underlies his character. So, while Scar and Sarabi still don’t get a lot of screentime together in The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King makes what screentime they do get much more impactful.
Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to the live-action remake of the original Disney animated film, The Lion King. The film will follow Mufasa in his early days; further plot details are currently under wraps. The film will likely explore Mufasa and Scar’s relationship and how it became as strained as it did. In the film, Timon and Pumba will return, with Billy Eicher and Seth Rogen reprising their roles.
