Ultimate Wolverine #3, from writer Christopher Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio, continues the story of the Ultimate Winter Solider, who appears to be the Ultimate Universe version of Wolverine, as the Russian agent battles two members of the mutant Opposition: Kitty Pryde and Gambit. Capuccio’s cover for the issue depicts the two X-Men heroes with vicious scars all over their faces, indicating just how dangerous their lives are in this new universe.

Ultimate Wolverine, whom his makers call the Winter Solider, is seemingly similar to the Logan of Earth-616, complete with his deadly, vicious adamantium claws and skeleton. The Winter Soldier’s creators are Magik, Colossus, and Omega Red, the mutant leaders of the Eurasian Republic, and members of the Maker’s Council, a group of villains dedicated to keeping the Earth under their iron rule. This new Winter Soldier’s origins were revealed in Ultimate Universe: One Year In, which detailed how scientists of the Eurasian Republic experimented on their nation’s mutants, eventually finding Logan and turning him into their very own Winter Soldier assassin.

Ultimate Wolverine is Officially Revealed (Replacing Bucky as Marvel’s New Winter Soldier?)

The official reveal of the new Ultimate Wolverine has arrived, unleashing a new, wild design for the X-Man in Marvel’s bold new Ultimate Universe.

The Eurasian Republic was made to be the land of mutants on Earth-6160, an interesting choice seeing as how Hi No Kuni from Ultimate X-Men is also filled with mutants. Of course, because of the villainous nature of the Republic’s leaders, mutants are mistreated, detained, and murdered regularly, which leads to the creation of a rebellious group called the Opposition. In Ultimate Wolverine #3, Kitty and Remy, who appear to be high-ranking Opposition members, are seen fighting against the violent Winter Soldier, who was sent on a mission to kill the mutants. Both heroes have multiple scars on their faces, which are permanent visual makeovers for the iconic characters that show just how dangerous being a member of the Opposition truly is.

Marvel’s solicit for Wolverine #3 ends by asking, “But do the duo recognize the man behind the mask?” The Eurasian Republic found their “specimen,” who they transformed into the Winter Solider, in the wild… could Logan have been a former member or leader of the Opposition? Logan is once again a weapon controlled by an evil government entity, and he needs to be freed from the grasp of the Eurasian leaders if he ever hopes to become a hero in the Ultimate Universe. Hopefully, Kitty and Gambit recognize the brainwashed assassin and are able to break through whatever programming has infected his mind…

Members of the X-Men rarely have permanent physical changes done to them, especially in their recent “immortal” Krakoan Age, making the scars that Gambit and Kitty memorable changes to their heroic designs, and hopefully they won’t leave their Winter Solider encounter with more scars!
