New Meet The Parents Movie Is The Perfect Opportunity To Bring The Ben Stiller & Robert De Niro Franchise Full Circle

A new Meet the Parents sequel is in development with the original cast returning — and it’s timed perfectly to go back to the franchise’s roots. It’s been 14 years since the last movie in this series, 2010’s Little Fockers, and now, a fourth Meet the Parents film is in the works. Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Teri Polo, and Blythe Danner are all in talks to reprise their roles from the original trilogy in the new reboot (via Deadline), and John Hamburg, the co-writer of all three previous movies, is back working on the script.

No plot details have been revealed about Meet the Parents 4, but the story that the reboot should follow seems obvious. The first movie, the endlessly quotable Meet the Parents, revolved around Stiller’s Greg Focker trying to win over his fiancée Pam’s stubborn parents. The second one, Meet the Fockers, revolved around Greg and Pam’s wedding, and the threequel, Little Fockers, saw them raising a family. The timing of Meet the Parents 4 gives it a golden opportunity to bring the series full circle.

It’s Been Just Long Enough For Meet The Parents 4 To Be About Greg Focker Meeting His Own Daughter’s Fiancé

It’ll Be A Huge Missed Opportunity If This Isn’t The Story

The original Meet the Parents revolved around Greg traveling to meet Pam’s parents — her father Jack, played by De Niro, and her mother Dina, played by Danner — in order to get their blessing to marry their daughter (and disaster quickly ensued). While Dina wanted to give Greg the benefit of the doubt, Jack mercilessly put him through the wringer. Now that Meet the Parents 4 is in development, just enough time has passed to flip that dynamic on Greg.

Daisy Tahan, who played Greg and Pam’s daughter Samantha in Little Fockers, is now in her 20s, so Meet the Parents 4 could tell the story of Samantha bringing her own fiancé home to meet her parents. It would give Greg a level of understanding for how Jack felt when they first met, and he would have to navigate that difficult situation with his own fatherly judgment. If this isn’t what Meet the Parents 4 is about, then it’ll be a huge wasted opportunity.

Meet The Parents 4 Is Risky (But It’s Worth It)

It’s Another Chance To Go Out On A High Note

Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro in Little Fockers

Meet the Parents 4 is a big risk — comedy sequels very rarely work out, especially so long after the last one — but it’s a risk that’s worth taking, because it’s another chance for the series to go out on a high note after the disappointment of Little Fockers. Little Fockers has a terrible 34% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even bleaker 9% approval rating from critics; it’s been slated as one of the worst films ever made. This new Meet the Parents movie won’t have to do much to top it as a better ending for the series.
