It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Glenn Howerton scored rave reviews for his turn in the sitcom A.P. Bio — and the show deserved much better than an early cancelation. Since its four seasons arrived on Netflix, A.P. Bio has climbed the streaming charts to become a huge success. It’s a shame that success has come so late, because the series always struggled for viewership when it was actually on the air. Howerton leads the A.P. Bio cast as Jack Griffin, a Harvard professor who’s forced to go back to his hometown and work at a high school after losing his dream job to his academic rival. This role made great use of the comedic strengths that Howerton has refined on It’s Always Sunny. Like Dennis Reynolds, Jack is vindictive and filled with rage. A.P. Bio always deserved a much bigger fan base than it got when it first aired — and now, that fan base has finally found it.

A.P. Bio was created by Saturday Night Live writer Mike O’Brien and executive-produced by Seth Meyers and Lorne Michaels. Patton Oswalt and Paula Pell star alongside Howerton. Although it was met with mixed reviews in its first season, A.P. Bio was met with a much warmer response from season 2 onward. Unfortunately, the viewers never caught up and A.P. Bio was canceled twice. NBC canceled the show after its second season in 2019, then it was picked up by Peacock for an additional two seasons through 2021, after which it was canceled again.

Since the success of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the actors have branched out and worked on other sitcoms. Kaitlin Olson has starred in Flipped and Agent Elvis. Charlie Day has co-created and guest-starred in The Cool Kids. Danny DeVito voiced Satan in the animated series Little Demon, alongside his daughter, Lucy DeVito. These other shows have been very hit-and-miss, with some hidden gems and some major disappointments. A.P. Bio ranks as one of the Always Sunny cast’s best extracurricular shows.

Despite its struggles in the ratings, A.P. Bio was always well-received by critics. It has an average score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, with seasons 2 and 3 both earning a perfect 100% score. Along with Olson’s The Mick and Rob McElhenney’s Mythic Quest, A.P. Bio is one of the best sitcoms starring a cast member from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now that it’s a hit on streaming, it’s the perfect time to catch up on its four seasons.
