Darkseid Is Dead, and His Death Is Ready to Reshape the DC Universe Says One Creator

In the wake of Darkseid’s death, DC writer Ram V reveals how the absence of Apokolips’ New God will play a primary role in shaping DC’s comics and V’s upcoming series with artist Evan Cagle, The New Gods. V also hints that the long-awaited return of the New Gods will influence both DC’s ongoing All In line-wide story – and the new Absolute Universe that was born from Darkseid’s death.

In an interview with GamesRadar, V gives insight into how his and Cagle’s new series will pick up the pieces that came from Darkseid’s demise in DC All In Special #1 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Wes Craig, Daniel Sampere, and Dan Mora, how that death will ripple across current stories, and how it will expand DC Universe lore.

For the first time in decades, Jack Kirby’s Fourth World will take center stage and play a key part in the DC Universe by influencing ongoing series such as Wonder Woman, Superman, and Green Lantern. V also adds to the anticipation for The New Gods series by hinting at a possible new second coming of Darkseid, who will arise in his absence.

DC’s New Series Brings Darkseid’s Obscure Origins Into the Light

Kirby’s Fourth World, which was born in Kirby’s original 1970s DC series like The New Gods and Mister Miracle, is chock-full of characters that have yet to be fully explored in the contemporary age, and V notes in his interview that he plans to do just that with heroes such as Orion and Mister Miracle. Despite the New Gods’ ambiguity, they’re an integral part of Darkseid’s origin, with the New Gods of Apokolips existing as the antithesis to the New Gods of New Genesis and the two entities harboring a long history of in-universe warfare. When asked about how the New Gods will intertwine with the current DC era, V states:

Part of The New Gods pitch was that Darkseid’s absence is going to create the Absolute Universe. The New Gods have always been in a position where they were outside of the multiversal drama of DC, they sort of sat at the conflux of all of these multiverses. Even though the multiverse is kind of closed off, the New Gods have access to both the All In universe and the Absolute Universe, though they may not know it yet. And so they actually connect the two universes in interesting ways. Darkseid, also being a New God, his eventual fate is very much tied to what will happen in this book also.

And then, not only that, but this was pitched as a story that finally unifies the Fourth World and the mainstream DCU. So about halfway through this run, we’re going to see New Gods on Earth: Green Lanterns getting involved, Superman getting involved, and Wonder Woman getting involved. So all of that is to come.

V’s disclosure that the New Gods will eventually gain access to the multiverse is an exciting revelation, as it opens the door for them to cross over into the main DCU as well as the Absolute Universe. Playing with the New Gods’ access to different dimensions is a unique way of making The New Gods hold weight in the main continuity, allowing these under-explored characters to interact with the main DC heroes. This larger plot also indicates the potential for New Genesis to act as the bridge for the main DC Universe to eventually cross paths with the Absolute Universe.

Will Darkseid Make His Return to the DCU?

Throughout his interview, V makes it clear that, despite Darkseid’s death, he still has a large part to play in the ongoing DC mythos. V notes that The New Gods story will focus on a prophecy that states that a child born on Earth will bring about the second coming of Darkseid, a threat that Orion, Darkseid’s estranged son, is tasked with neutralizing. Darkseid’s fate is tied to the events of the series, which means his presence and past actions will still be felt in spite of his absence.

Darkseid has been one of the most infamously powerful villains in the DCU for years, and his death has left a multidimensional impact on DC’s main universe, the Fourth World, and the creation of the Absolute Universe. V and Cagle’s New Gods is anticipated to explore the untapped potential of the world of New Genesis on top of unifying Kirby’s Fourth World with the main DCU. As Darkseid’s death influences the ongoing DC mythos, his legacy will eventually become an even grander problem with the impending prophecy of his second coming and possible return within The New Gods series.
