Night Court star John Larroquette has reflected on season 2’s “perfect” tribute to an original star of the show and future callbacks to past characters. The ongoing revival of the 1980s sitcom sees Larroquette return as Dan Fielding, now a former assistant district attorney and current public defender. He joins Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch), daughter of Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), who overseas the court as judge, with the revival making plenty of references to the original series. With Night Court season 3 due to start the day this article was written, more Easter eggs are no doubt on the horizon.
Speaking with TV Insider, Larroquette reflected on Night Court season 2’s “perfect” tribute to Markie Post’s Christine Sullivan from the original, by featuring Gigi Rice as her sister, Katie. The actor commented on how the pair once played sisters in the 2019 TV movie Christmas Reservations, and his own work with Rice in the ’90s on The John Larroquette Show. He said these past roles from the actor made her appearance perfect, and something he hopes future seasons can replicate with their own tributes. Check out what Larroquette had to say below:
I think having Gigi Rice come as Markie’s, Christine Sullivan’s sister was a great idea. And actually in the past, Gigi Rice and Markie Post played sisters in a movie for television that they had done. And Gigi I loved because me and Gigi worked together on The John Larroquette Show. It just was a natural fit to address that relationship between Fielding and Christine Sullivan and what happened after it was all over. It was perfect. Certainly when those opportunities arise, we’ll approach them with some careful love and heart and hopefully be able to do them again.
Markie Post died on August 7, 2021 at age 70 in Los Angeles, California.

The Actor Hopes For More References To The Past
Aside from Larroquette’s return and Abby being Harry’s daughter, the cast of Night Court also contains other references to the original series. Different characters have similar roles to their original counterparts, such as Olivia (India de Beaufort) taking over as assistant district attorney, and Grugs (Lacretta) taking over as bailiff for Bull (Richard Moll). The series also constantly acknowledges that the events of the original happened, ensuring awareness of its past without always directly emphasizing every aspect of its previous installment.

By having Rice portray Christine’s sister, the series more directly emphasizes its past, bringing in a character that has direct connections with others from the series. While it’s unclear how much season 3 will embrace a similar approach, the show will contain a The Big Bang Theory reunion between Rauch and Mayim Bailik, who portrayed Amy in the prior sitcom. Not only does the show acknowledge its own past, but also the past of its stars, making for the perfect platform to honor all the comedic stories that led to the revival – directly connected or not.

Although there have already been references to the original, and now a very direct tribute to the past, it’s likely that Night Court will contain even more surprises going into season 3. While it’s unclear how many direct references to the original will be in the upcoming episodes, something similar to Rice’s appearance seems likely now that the show has successfully tested it out. Perhaps this will include more relatives of original characters, honoring the legacies of those who came before.
