August 12, 2022

Based on the iconic Tom Hanks movie of the same name, A League of Their Own is set in 1943 and depicts the birth of an All-American women’s baseball team called the Rockford Peaches. Read Our ReviewA critical and commercial success alike, The Bear became an unexpected phenomenon upon its premiere in 2022 — and for good reason. With top-tier writing, acting, and directing, it’s a show that’s constantly firing on all cylinders. The series follows culinary prodigy Carmen Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns from the world of fine dining back to his family-run Chicago beef restaurant after the death of his brother. There, he must earn the trust and respect of the restaurant’s existing employees and work with the talented Syd (Ayo Edebiri) to keep the business afloat.

Sprinkled with a dash of biting comedy, The Bear has the same tension as one would expect from a high-performance culinary kitchen, with each episode dragging the audience through a cavalcade of emotions in the search for a happy ending (whatever that looks like). Despite its brooding sense of dread, each character is given the utmost respect, leading to some of TV’s most satisfying character arcs. Brutal but strangely beautiful in its chaos, The Bear is television at its most unforgettable. – Jake Hodges

‘Baby Reindeer’ (2024)

Rotten Tomatoes: 83% | IMDb: 8.2/10

Read Our ReviewBased on a true story, Baby Reindeer is a drama-thriller miniseries created by and starring Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, adapted from Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show. The seven-episode show follows Gadd’s real-life experience of being stalked. The series stars Gadd as Donny and Jessica Gunning as his stalker, Martha. A thrilling partly fictionalized story of real trauma, Baby Reindeer is a complex and brilliantly conceived show that’s received universal acclaim from critics. The show is produced by Clerkenwell Films, who also did Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World, and there is a clear connection between the two in terms of tone. The narrative can be quite painful and messy at times, but it’s all underscored by a dark and twisted sense of humor. The fact that these events are based on reality just makes the show feel even more surreal as Donny and Martha’s story escalates and spirals out of control. This is a series that demands to be binged, as each episode will leave you eager for the next.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.

Premiering in 1999, Law & Order: SVU was the first spinoff to come from the original Law & Order. In 2019, it became the longest-running primetime live-action series on U.S. television. Created by Dick Wolf, who also created the original Law & Order, the show follows the Special Victims Unit, which is a squad of detectives in the NYPD who investigate sexually-related crimes. Lead actress Mariska Hargitay is the only cast member who has been around since the pilot episode of the series and stars alongside Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins, Ice-T as Odafin Tutuola, and Peter Scanavino as Dominick Carisi, just to name a few.

SVU can boast that it is number four in total episode count of a primetime scripted series, with The Simpsons at number one, Gunsmoke coming in second, and Lassie in third. Creator Wolf was inspired to create the show after the infamous trial of Robert Chambers, who claimed he accidentally strangled a woman during a consensual act; however, he was later convicted of murder. Wolf was intrigued by what would make a person behave this way, and thus, SVU was born. Now renewed for its 25th season, the show has no plans to slow down. – Emily Cappello

The mockumentary sitcom, which ran from 2005 to 2013, was not only a hit when it was airing regularly on NBC but showed the power that streaming can bring to an older show, giving it a renaissance in its own right. Based on the UK show of the same name, The Office was created for the American audience by original UK creators Steven Merchant and Ricky Gervais, as well as newcomer Greg Daniels, whose previous credits involve being Conan O’Brien’s writing partner on Saturday Night Live. If you like catchphrases like “well, well, well, how the turn tables;” “I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious;” and “the worst thing about prison was the dementors,” then The Office is for you.

Starring the incomparable Steve Carrell as Michael Scott, the show is packed with now household names, thanks to its success. This impressive list includes John Krasinski (writer of the hit horror film The Quiet Place), Mindy Kaling (showrunner to hits like The Mindy Project), Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (hosts of The Office rewatch podcast “Office Ladies”), Ed Helms (The Hangover), Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Bridesmaids), and Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), just to name a few. Spanning five years and four very successful seasons, Succession follows the now-famous Roy family, heads of the biggest media conglomerate in the world. Devoid of all redeeming qualities, the family will use anything within their reach to not just keep their names at the top but extend their lead. By fighting, cheating, and out-witting their opposition, can the Roy family ever be stopped in their malevolent pursuit to conquer?

Through tight scripts and superb ensemble acting, the heights of global business are scrutinized for all their worst values through a family thriving thanks to their lack of morals. With the likes of Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong excelling, the true charm of Succession arguably comes from just how morally bankrupt and unlikeable almost everyone is in the same sort of sadistic way horror movies keep you glued despite the terror. – Jake Hodges
