6 Things Ted Lasso’s Cast & Creators Have Said About Season 4 Happening

From Bill Lawrence to Hannah Waddingham, a lot of key cast and crew members involved with Ted Lasso have weighed in on the possibility of returning to the hit Apple TV+ comedy series for season 4. When season 3 aired in 2023, it was touted as the final season. The last episode of the season — season 3, episode 12, “So Long, Farewell” — played as a pretty straightforward series finale that wrapped up the story of Ted’s tenure at AFC Richmond, sent him back to Kansas to reunite with Henry, and left all the other characters in a similarly good place.

But the ending of Ted Lasso season 3 didn’t completely close the door on future storylines. Roy, Nate, and Beard continued working at Richmond and Keeley proposed a women’s team to Rebecca, suggesting an all-female spin-off show could follow. When Warner Bros. renewed the contracts of some of the core cast members, speculation started running rampant that the series would be returning for another season after all. Ted Lasso season 4 hasn’t been officially confirmed, but it hasn’t been officially ruled out, either. 6 Bill Lawrence Said Ted Lasso’s Future Is Up To Jason Sudeikis

In August 2024, Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence was asked about the possibility of season 4 while promoting his new Apple TV+ crime drama, Bad Monkey (which has received even better reviews than Ted Lasso). Lawrence said that his policy on Ted Lasso is to always defer to Jason Sudeikis’ judgment. Since shooting a TV show in the UK is “a big, major life decision for Jason,” Lawrence says that fans will “never hear from anybody until you hear from him.” Ted Lasso’s future is in the hands of Ted Lasso himself.

Lawrence said he’d “kill to watch” more seasons of Ted Lasso, but it’s not up to him; it’s up to Sudeikis. He said that he often throws out answers about a possible Scrubs reboot, but he takes a different approach to Ted Lasso’s future: “I wait with bated breath to see whatever Jason feels like doing.” Lawrence slyly added that he and the other creators “never answer” questions about the show’s future, “even if we’ve heard stuff.” So, there may have been official developments on Ted Lasso’s future that haven’t been revealed to the public yet.

5 Hannah Waddingham Said She’d “Be Stupid Not To” Return For Ted Lasso Season 4

In a September 2024 interview, Hannah Waddingham was asked about whether or not Ted Lasso season 4 was really happening, and whether or not she would be involved. Waddingham plays one of Ted Lasso’s most significant characters, Rebecca Welton, the owner of AFC Richmond and one of Ted’s closest friends. News of a potential Ted Lasso season 4 first broke when Warner Bros. picked up the options on Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift’s contracts through the UK acting union Equity. Naturally, Waddingham was one of the first actors pressed for answers about the possibility of season 4.

While Waddingham didn’t have a solid answer on whether or not season 4 is happening, she did seem enthusiastic about reprising her role as Rebecca. She didn’t confirm whether season 4 is getting made or not, but she did confirm that if it did become a reality, she would be in. She described her colleagues on the show as “some of the greatest loves of my life” and said that she would “be stupid not to” return if season 4 was in the offing. But she added, “I don’t know” if the show is coming back.

If Ted Lasso season 4 did happen, Rebecca would need to be involved. It wouldn’t really feel like the same show without her, and while her story has technically ended, she still has a future. Since Rebecca started a budding romance and approved the launch of a Richmond women’s team at the end of season 3, it would be interesting to see where that ends up.

4 Moe Hashim Said Ted Lasso Season 4 Could Be 20 Years Away

Moe Hashim, who plays footballer Moe Bumbercatch in Ted Lasso, seems optimistic about the series’ future. Like Waddingham, he didn’t outright confirm whether or not season 4 is in active development, but he did suggest that viewers haven’t seen the last of AFC Richmond. While discussing his role in Peacock’s gladiator series Those About to Die in an August 2024 interview, Hashim said he believes Ted Lasso will eventually be back — but it could take a while. Hashim said that he doesn’t believe season 3 will really be “the end of Ted Lasso,” despite how it was marketed by Apple.

Hashim said that it “could be in 20 years’ time” that the story continues with a fourth season or a spin-off series. Apple will likely want more Ted Lasso before 2044, since it’s the flagship property keeping their streaming service afloat, but it might be 20 years before Sudeikis and co. have more stories to tell. It would be interesting to see a reunion 20 years down the line — Henry would be all grown up and there would be a new generation of Richmond players — but hopefully, the show’s producers can get a fourth season together long before then.

3 Cristo Fernández Wants To Reprise His Role As Dani Rojas “Many More Times”

Dani Rojas actor Cristo Fernández has also weighed in on the possibility of Ted Lasso season 4. In a September 2024 interview, Fernández was asked about the recent speculation on a fourth season and whether or not he’d heard anything from the producers. Apparently, Fernández learned about the potential news of Ted Lasso season 4 at the same time everyone else did, when an article was published reporting that several cast members’ contracts had been renewed through Equity. He hadn’t heard anything from the producers themselves about a possible fourth season before the media started reporting on it.

Although he doesn’t know for sure if Ted Lasso season 4 has been greenlit at Apple, Fernández is open to returning. He said that he will be “forever grateful” to the writers, the producers, and his fellow cast members for the opportunities he was given on the series. Fernández said that he would love to reprise his role as Dani “many more times,” whether it’s in a fourth season of the mainline series or a spin-off show. If there’s more Ted Lasso, he’s “excited” to see what comes and “want[s] to be part of it.”

While the media are eager to ask all the cast members about a potential Ted Lasso season 4, the studio executives behind the show are much more likely to have solid answers about its future. Speaking in October 2024, Warner Bros. TV Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey provided a tantalizing update on Ted Lasso season 4. She made sure not to officially confirm whether or not season 4 is happening, but she did say that the studio is having “conversations about season 4” with the series’ creators, and that those conversations are “very exciting conversations.”

She did also clarify that they’re still in the “early days” of those discussions, so don’t expect any official developments any time soon. Dungey reiterated Lawrence’s point that it’s really up to Sudeikis. She said that Warner Bros. has no interest in making more Ted Lasso if Sudeikis and the team aren’t “feeling excited about it.” However, she did add that Sudeikis is “feeling really excited” about these season 4 talks, and he “feels good” about a potential return to the series. So, a season 4 announcement is probably a while away, but it’s getting closer to becoming a reality.

Lawrence may have said that Ted Lasso season 4 won’t get announced without Sudeikis’ approval, but he didn’t say how Sudeikis feels about a potential season 4. Dungey, on the other hand, has confirmed a first-hand account of seeing that Sudeikis is getting excited about bringing the series back for a fourth season. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out the best way to bring back the character and continue the story without undermining the bittersweet finality of season 3’s ending.

Keeley Jones actor Juno Temple was asked about Ted Lasso season 4 on the red carpet at the Emmys in September 2024. Temple said, “I hope” season 4 happens, but also added, “I don’t know yet.” She said, “I’ve heard that it sounds like it may be happening,” but it’s unclear if she heard that from an official source or the same article everyone else saw. She also added that the possibility of a Ted Lasso season 4 is “really exciting,” indicating that she’d be up for reprising her role as Keeley in the show’s future.

There’s a pattern of cast members hearing about the possibility of Ted Lasso season 4 the same way as everyone else. Whether that happens in Ted Lasso season 4 or an as-yet-unannounced spin-off series, it would be a huge wasted opportunity not to follow up on it.
