Spencer Reid was one of the most beloved characters in Criminal Minds, and while he is technically still a part of the BAU, Reid has yet to make an appearance in Criminal Minds: Evolution. The show vaguely explained the doctor’s absence by mentioning that he was on sabbatical and away on an undisclosed special assignment, but Reid is confirmed to make an appearance in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, but only in a portion of one episode, not the entire season.
While actor Matthew Gray Gubler’s return to the franchise is exciting, because of the limited scope of the cameo, Reid probably does not return to help with the overarching case, but for a more personal reason. Over Criminal Minds‘ many seasons, Reid had many tragedies happen to him and connected in unique ways with various unsubs and victims, any of whom could provide a reason for him to return. Because Reid is still officially a part of the BAU, it will be seamless to write him into Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3.

Reid always had a special relationship with Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, even having unrequited feelings for her before she met her husband, Will LaMontaigne Jr. Will faced a health scare in Criminal Minds, and actor Josh Stewart is confirmed not to be returning to Criminal Minds: Evolution. JJ has handled many hurdles with grace, but losing her husband and the father of her children would be a compelling reason for Reid to return to help his friend.
JJ has been there to emotionally support Reid, especially when he was grieving losses like Maeve Donovan. Whatever special assignment had been keeping Reid away from the BAU, he would surely drop everything to support his chosen family through the mourning process.

Reid Could Reflect On Jason Gideon’s Legacy
Reid never fully recovered from the betrayal he felt when Jason Gideon, his first mentor and the man who recruited him into the BAU, left the team suddenly without a proper goodbye. The departure triggered Reid’s sense of abandonment, as it reminded him of his own father leaving. Although Gideon wrote Reid a letter acknowledging their special bond, it did little to ease the pain of his absence.

Reid Identified With Owen As Someone Who Endured Bullying
Owen Savage was a high school injustice collector whose breaking point involved a painful and humiliating hazing ritual at the hands of the wrestling team in Criminal Minds season 3, episode 16, “Elephant’s Memory.” Owen’s experience resonates with Reid, reminding him of his own struggles with bullying. Reid can’t help but identify with the young unsub, who believed he was acting to protect his girlfriend. Reid is the BAU team member able to connect with Owen and get him to stand down.
In “Elephant’s Memory,” Owen was just a teenager, meaning that by 2025, he would have spent more than half his life in prison. If Owen were eligible for parole, Reid—being a key member of the team that apprehended him—would likely be called to testify. This scenario could present an intriguing moral dilemma for Reid, torn between his duty to uphold the law and his empathy for Owen, whom he saw as a reflection of his younger self and who he might believe deserves a second chance.

Reid Returns For A Case That Goes Back To Reid’s Childhood
Many of the best episodes of Criminal Minds have a personal connection to one of the BAU team members, including Riley Jenkins, who was a murder victim from Reid’s childhood. The case haunted him until he finally solved it decades later as a member of the BAU in Criminal Minds season 4, episode 7, “Memoriam.” This was an intensely personal case for Reid, who, despite his eidetic memory, recalled details disjointedly.
Riley’s murderer was ultimately killed by his father, illustrating the show’s recurring theme that trauma often begets more trauma. Riley also had an older brother who, though only slightly older than him, might be at risk of committing a similar crime if triggered. If a copycat crime tied to the Riley Jenkins case were to occur, Reid would undoubtedly feel compelled to get involved, unable to stand by given the case’s deep connection to his past.

Criminal Minds had many disturbing unsubs, including Nathan Harris. He was an incidental character in season 2, episode 11 “Sex, Birth, and Death” who turned himself in before committing a crime. Nathan recognized he has sexual sadism urges and sought Reid out for a path forward. However, the BAU’s hands were tied as Nathan had not acted on his urges yet.
Nathan’s future was left very open-ended, raising the fascinating and troubling question of what someone can do to prevent acting on urges they cannot control. Nearly 20 years later, Nathan could be institutionalized, incarcerated, or even working on legislation to help others like him. If Nathan were to reach out to Reid for help, Reid’s lingering guilt over not being able to help him the first time would undoubtedly compel him to try.

Lila Archer Requests Spencer Reid’s Involvement
Reid Returns At The Behest Of A Season 1 Romantic Interest
In one of Reid’s best episodes of Criminal Minds, he had an instant connection with movie star Lila Archer in Criminal Minds season 1, episode 18 “Somebody’s Watching.” Other members of the BAU were surprised and impressed when Lila requested Reid over Derek Morgan to protect her alone in her house. Lila tries to get Reid to loosen up his G-man behavior, even dragging him into the pool for a steamy kiss.
Unfortunately, Lila’s burgeoning relationship with Reid did not lead to anything, but it could be overdue for a reunion in Criminal Minds: Evolution. If Lila stayed in the entertainment business, numerous threats could require FBI attention, and Lila has already requested Reid once before.
