Dandadan is a hilarious, heartwarming, and action-packed anime featuring some of the most lovable characters around. Ken Takamura is a normal kid who loves the supernatural. While he knows a ton about aliens, he doesn’t know much about making friends. That all changes when Momo Ayase decides to give him a chance, getting to know the playful and true side of ‘Okarun’ he’s been destined to reveal. It’s an amazing show with two equally amazing main characters.
The show itself is filled with quality themes that any fan of anime can understand. Through only 12 episodes, Dandadan shows that people are more than they seem to be, forgiveness is great for everyone, and so much more. Fans of anime across all genres can relate to the themes put forward in Dandadan and see for themselves that Okarun and Momo’s relationship is much more than it first appears to be in the best ways possible.

Always Give People a Chance
Both Villains and Heroes Get a Second Chance in Dandadan
There are a ton of characters in Dandadan that deserve a second chance. Okarun himself started the series as a nervous wreck before turning into one of the coolest characters in anime in his Turbo Granny form. Beyond the main protagonists, there are multiple characters in the series who start off on the wrong foot before they get a second chance to explain themselves and eventually befriend the main cast. Characters like Aira, Acrobatic Silky, Jiji, and even Turbo Granny herself change their ways once they’re given a chance.
Turbo Granny seemed like, and was, a villain for the first few episodes of the series. She stole Okarun’s manhood from him when Momo told him to go investigate the haunted tunnel she lived in. While it took Okarun and Momo a lot to defeat her, they learned about her along the way. The tunnel she lived in was a popular spot for criminals to take unconsenting girls and assault them. She lived in the tunnel to protect those girls and took away their manhood in the process, causing Okarun and Momo to see her in an entirely different light.
In the first few episodes of the series, Aira and Acrobatic Silky also started closer to villains than heroes. Aira was convinced that Momo was a demon and that she had to dispose of her. She even tied Momo up and was going to hurt her before Acrobatic Silky showed up and changed everything. After their fight, it was revealed that Aira had misunderstood everything and that Acrobatic Silky was really just reacting based on her anger from her past life as a mother.

Never Judge a Book by Its Cover
People Are More Than They Appear To Be
Okarun starts the series as a nervous, helpless kid who doesn’t understand other people and doesn’t have any friends. Once Momo befriends him, his world starts to open up. He’s able to meet interesting people, go on heart-racing adventures, and open up more to the world and the people in it. When he gets Turbo Granny’s powers early in the season, he grows as a character even more. In his Turbo Granny form, Okarun is the most confident guy around.
Underneath his nervous and anxious personality, he’s a pretty confident guy, but the Turbo Granny form turns it up to an eleven. His classmates have only ever known him as a worrying wreck, so they have no problem belittling his friend Momo to his face. In one of the best moments in the series, Okarun grabs a bully by his collar for insulting Momo and makes him take it back. It’s an exceptional moment in the series that not only shows how much Okarun cares for his new friend, but the lengths he’s willing to go to defend her.

One of the greatest strengths of Dandadan lies in its ability to catch viewers off guard with unexpected and unpredictable scenes.
Okarun is much more than he appears to be. His character depth gets deeper and deeper as the series progresses, showing that while he’s a pretty anxious guy, that’s not all he is. He’s also a kindhearted, hard-working young man who would do anything for his friends. He even starts working out behind Momo’s back to get stronger for both of them in their future fights against demons, aliens, and whoever else is coming for them.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Especially When You Can’t Solve Something Alone
Shōnen anime is all about asking for help. While there’s a piece of everyone that wants to handle things alone, that’s not always for the best. By reaching out to others and asking for help, everything becomes a lot easier both physically and emotionally. This is shown best in the famed Granny vs. Granny fight early in season one when Turbo Granny fights Seiko Ayase, Momo’s grandma. Okarun can’t hold back Turbo Granny from possessing him without Momo’s help, but Turbo Granny outlasts them.
Unfortunately for Turbo Granny, Seiko isn’t one to be messed with when she’s on her home turf. She’s able to make quick work of the spirit, saving both Okarun and Momo in the process. If it wasn’t for her, they probably wouldn’t have survived Turbo Granny. Funnily enough, Turbo Granny also saves Momo from the Serpoians even earlier in the series when Okarun calls Momo for help, allowing Turbo Granny to fly through the phone and take the Serpoians on in a great fight.

Fight For What You Believe In
No Matter How Ridiculous or Desperate You May Look
Okarun was a nervous character too willing to back down at the start of Dandadan. He let his classmates throw paper at him without so much as asking them to stop. With his Turbo Granny powers, however, he’s the first person to fly into a fight. He’s also more than willing to stand up for Momo and will make bullies regret bad-mouthing her in front of him. It’s a great transformation for his character arc and a great reminder that certain things in life are worth fighting for.

Dandadan presented its most controversial scene, but the changes from the manga prove the adaptation wanted to spark polemic with its cliffhanger.
Okarun isn’t fighting everything that might be an obstacle, like Aira for instance, but he is willing to fight for what he believes in. It’s an important theme not only in Dandadan but in every show that portrays a struggle. There are plenty of other characters in the series that fight hard for what they want too, including Momo when she wants to save Okarun, Taro when he wants to find his loved one, and Acrobatic Silky when she lays down her life for Aira.

Always Be Yourself
No Matter How Hard or Uncomfortable It May Look
Dandadan stands out from other anime series thanks to its colorful cast of characters. Characters like Okarun, Momo, Jiji, and even Mr. Mantis Shrimp are all unapologetically themselves, even when it isn’t easy. Okarun loves all things extraterrestrial and is willing to read his favorite books in the middle of class, even if it means getting ridiculed for it. Thanks to his unique and true interest in an uncommon subject, Momo takes an interest in him, leading to a great friendship and maybe even more in the future.
Momo’s interest in spirits is also a big reason why Okarun wants to know more about her. If Momo had been someone inauthentic or acted like she was interested in the same things as everyone else in an attempt to fit in, she wouldn’t have developed the relationship she now has with Okarun. It’s an important point in the series that gets brought up over and over again by each main or supporting character, showing the importance of being yourself, no matter how hard it might be.
